Hi All
This summer I'm planning to attend IAW in East-Durham. My class in basic box playing is offered in the morning which leaves the delemma of what to do in the afternoon. Should I take a class in art or dance because they're offered or will I be able to find other beginners to play with or should I just drink beer by the pool? Any thoughts by those of you who have been there would by most appreciated.
Heather
My very little experience with IAW would indicate that there's always tunes to be had. If you don't know people there, change that and see if you can hang out and play tunes. Always a good idea when there's not a class going on.
I took two instrument classes last year and it was a bit of a struggle to find time to practice tunes from both classes. On the other hand, I'd hate to waste the opportunity so I'd probably take two again.
An instrument class and dance/arts class wouldn't suffer from that, unless you need to practice steps.
There are tons of folks just sitting around playing music, even a social introvert like myself can't help meeting good folks.
Heather, there are always people just hanging out in the afternoon playing tunes. I am also a beginner and always had people to play tunes with last year at the Catskills - at any time of day. Personally, I'd rather hang out, meet new people and play tunes than take some art class, but that's just me. You will have a lot of fun. It's a great week!
If any of those motels in East Durham have pools, I would recommend getting a tetanus shot first before jumping in....really!
I'll be down there this summer. Not sure if I'm doing a whole week or just a long weekend. I leave for Ireland next week and then I'm doing Gaelic Roots at Boston College for a whole week in June. So I'm not sure how much vacation time I'll have left for the Catskills....
I'd love to hook up and play a few tunes with any members from this site as well. I'm sure I'll be posting a "Who's going to Irish Arts Week" discussion as the time gets closer.
