I've recently become addicted to Skype. Anyone here use it? I'm addicted to it at the moment. You can do this thing called skypecast where you can have a forum thing and talk to a whole load of people at the same time like a phone, or you can just talk to people via a video linkup. I've been talking to my family back in the UK and really enjoying it. It's very futuristic. I reckon one day we'll have linkups like that on our watches like they have in sci-fi films.
The link with trad is, um, that you could have a trad Skypecast, or something, or a session Skypecast. Kind of like an online party where everyone can see everyone else. I dunno I was hoping people might have some suggestions as to how the online trad community could use it to their advantage. People do language learning courses on it and stuff. Perhaps it might be useful for people who want to teach/learn an instrument...
I use skype and its wonderful my phone Bill has dropped like a stone ( puts up two fingers to BT( British Telecom ))
However playing together may be a problem with lag ( time delay ) I have enough time delay playing live not sure would be better playing with you down under Dow . 11,000 miles is a lot of wire /airspace .even at the speed of light
ooh, imagine what those heated debates on the session would be like via video! if we can see the people we're arguing with, it adds a whole other layer of inslts that we can fling!!
Sounds interesting. Could remove the need for emoticons. People could yell at one another face to face instead of posting reams and reams of misunderstandings and we'd get to know what Llig looks like. Kool.
I think it would help me. I mean, if someone falls out with me, we could skype each other and either just yell at each other face to face and make rude gestures at each other, or smile at each other and make up.
I predict that this whole thing is the future of internet interaction.
If only I could get the video thing to work with my parents. Their local connection is crap b/c they live in the middle of nowhere...
I have Skype and got it mainly to speak with, and see, my son who lives in the USA.
It´s free to download but you need to have broadband, a microphone (built in or separate) and - if you want to take full advantage - a webcam.
I also use it to phone my sister in the UK. She doesn´t have skype but I call her landline number and we can chat away for ages for next to nothing. Once, we talked for an hour and a half and I don´t think it came to even one euro.
As Dow says, it has many possibilities, but my limitations are to do with time more than anything else.
I once swapped some tunes with an uilleann piper friend in Toulouse but it has to be consecutive, you couldn´t both play at the same time and be heard together.
Dow, when I play the Foxhunter's Reel on shakey eggs, I employ a little-known technique, wherein I grasp one egg between thumb and forefinger, and the other between ring finger and that meaty part of the thumb, er, I can't exactly explain it: Here, I'll show you on our deluxe Internet-connect-with-video wristwitches, so you can see how it's done... Oh, wait, when I do the technique, my watch-cam is aimed at the floor. Just forget it. There's just no teaching some people.
I've come to depend on Skype. Contact with family back in Ireland and colleagues who have moved to other companies. Also under-the-table communication during teleconferences.
..and its great! Phone bills dropped through the floor, and the best was me speaking (in Dundee) to my brother in Stuttgart, my Sister in Jo-Berg, my Dad, in London and my mum in North Uist, all in a single conference call!!
My friend in Shetland decided to learn the Uilleann pipes and found someone who gave lessons via skype!!! I kid you not....
Just had my first Skype call yesterday from South Africa to the US, and the sound quality was better than when we talk on the phone (my land line, his mobile phone). Can't beat the price either, i.e. free! It is really easy to use, and so versatile. Makes the world a much smaller place. It would seem one could take music lessons from anyone anywhere if both had webcams.
Yep, I am on Skype too. Having fairly recently downloaded it I have yet to use it to make a phone call and seem to be using it as an alternative MSN. Perhaps once my friends list increases a bit I will make better use of it. Certainly I can only see it becoming more useful for everyone as time goes on.
Skype's fantastic, especially whilst living abroad. I use it to ring friends and family in the US, Canada, Japan, wherever. Saves me from the Long Distance Mobile Phone Bills of Doom.
Skype is great but chews through huge amounts of bandwidth.
Seems you would need an "unlimited" account in broadband, because once you go over limit in a capped account, you will pay big time for extra usage.
Any solutions?
What about a recommendation then as to a good provider, clear drops. Much obliged. Unfortunately, I have to use wireless internet for work while traveling, and also because my area has not had decent internet coverage. So, I am forced to pay $109 a month for an account that is fine for business and ordinary usage, but not for applications like Skype. Sorry if I sounded like a cheapskate, or worse - a wet blanket even!
Couldn't ever afford to sound like that! And so very politically incorrect as well! Never.
Joke, Duijera Dubh! I thought it was me who lived out in the outback, but I've got broadband ... and you have to admit, until you explained it, it came over a bit lame. Sorry? Politically incorrect?
Anyone use Skype?

What a wet blanket! So get an unlimited account! Easy peasy. I've had one for years and I never have to worry about extra usage.
