Mandolin serial # lookup

Mandolin serial # lookup

I have a F2 Gibson mandolin and I'm trying to confirm the year it was made. Serial # 97002. I think it's about a 1921, but possibly earlier. I would like to sell it, was thinking of listing it on ebay, IF anyone can help me by offering advice and directions, that would be fabulous!!

Thanks very much!

If that serial number is correct, it is a late thirties instrument, one of very few made. All of this information is on the Mandolin archive list (http://www.mandolinarchive.com/perl/list_mandolins.pl?post-loar:11) for your year) and is pretty accurate.

I would list it on http://www.mandolincafe.com if you want a decent sale. But I would go to the discussion section first with a few pictures to find the true value of this instrument.

Also, look at that serial number again to make sure you have it correct.

My advice, without knowing any circumstances, is to hold on to it and treasure it. Maybe if you were going to buy a Martin instead I would forgive you.

Re: Mandolin serial # lookup

Why are you selling this F2? I too have a Gibson - A0, 1910. I don't use it much for gigs, it needs a re-fret and I'm concerned about accidents to old ebony fingerboards. However, I've now got a good-sounding Korean hand-made one which I use for all gigs; I play the A0 at home and use it for recording.
I looked around at prices, and found that, really, for something that old and that precious, I was not REALLY going to get what it's worth.
I would suggest you re-think! Modern hand-made one's are getting cheaper, and once you stick a pick-up on it, it doesn't make a lot of difference.
