Hi Im new to the site and just moved to vancouver from Ireland Im looking for any trad irish music groups that i could learn/play with all the ones i seem to have found on the web are professional bands i play the fiddle.any suggestions anyone, CCE dont have any branches here
Don't forget Vancouver Island as well, some great musicians out there, as well on some of the smaller islands too. AND ~ a lot of Irish music is played for dance in the area, or used to be ~ contra dance... I was sure there used to be a Comhaltas group in the city, but maybe that has folded. It has been awhile since I was in the neighbourhood, but great people. There had also been some dancing in the park during the summer, but that too may have stopped? I'll see if I can find anything more solid for you to hold onto...like other contacts...
Damn, I forgot about you. Yes, strum the 'oldstrings' link and drop him a line if flutefry hasn't already made that connection. You know, the more dots you connect the stronger the safety net... And, the islands are well worth a visit, especially once you know a musician or two out there.
Hey oldstrings and flutefry, is that annual folk festival still going on out there? I can't remember which island my brain has become that much muddled with age...
I have just realized that the "access to information" for this area is somewhat convoluted. I can't see an appropriate method for cleaning it up, so I'll make some comments here:
Entering "Canada, British Columbia" will turn up seven listings, in and around Vancouver and Victoria.
The entry for Wolf and Hounds will show a Thursday
(defunct) listed by Mandobrynley, who has apparently left town. This link, however, leads to most of the other current sessions.
The famous Irish Heather session is no more. There are still "performances" from time to time.
Fiddletech (Dave Marshall) and Glitchless (Paul Gitlitz) are still icons in the neighbourhood.
The Snug Cafe is currently running on Saturdays on Bowen Island, a fifteen minute ferry ride from West Vancouver. A warm welcome is guaranteed, but remember that these are *islanders* and it is advisable to make advance contact to ensure that they aren't all out fishing or something.
The Vancouver Folk Festival is still going strong, followed by the nearby Mission Folk Festival. Hopefully someone will enter them in "events".
A new small session (limited to 5 to start) has begun in Steveston at the Buck & Ear Bar & Grill on Tuesday nights 7:30-10:30. As the audience gets used to it and grows we hope it can expand.
thanks for all the help, my fiddle wont be with me til january but im sure i could pick up a tin whistle fairly easy or at least come along to the sessions once i get settled. I think going to the one tonight could be difficult as we have just settled in but thanks for all the advice and i'll be in touch with people, Sinead

Some other possibilities here:
Session: Irish Heather
http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/714
http://www.fiddletech.com/index.html
Glitchless = Paul Gitlitz
http://www.thesession.org/members/display/12153
Session: Wolf & Hound
http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/877
mandobrynley
http://www.thesession.org/members/display/14745
These are old entries but may still be good, or the folks that submitted them may be able to offer additional guidance...

Re: vancouver-any irish music groups?
Are you in Vancouver, WA state or Vancouver, British Columbia?
There is indeed a CCE chapter in Vancouver WA (near Portland) if you are in that area. Please contact me and I'll help you out.
