I had a bad dream last night that someone broke my favorite fiddle bow and I went into a rage. I remember saying that I was only letting the guy live because the fiddle itself was OK. I woke up feeling furious, and then felt so much better when I realized that it was only a dream and my bow was fine.
Anyone else have crazy dreams about their instrument being damaged?
i have recurring nightmares about my overton whistle being dented by someone, normally a melodeon player who's name i will withold for the time being, sitting on it. It happened in reality with a less expensive one, and means i can play in E rather than D now...
I have recurring dreams, the theme being discovering that one of my instruments is damaged. For example, I open up the case of one of my pipes and find that the wood is worm-eaten. Or I open the case of a flute and discover that some of the keys are broken. I'm never in a performance situation, always at home when I discover the damage.
A similar thing is the dream I've had a few times: I look at my teeth in the mirror and see that I have a cavity, or a chipped or cracked tooth.
One of you psychologist types will have a field day with these...
I've had several dreams like Richard's over the years. Usually I'm in a music shop of some kind, and they have an assortment of flutes or odd wind instruments. I'm very happy because I get to try out all these weird things. But it never works out - flutes are cracked, the finger holes are too far apart, or there's too many holes. Keys are missing, or I just can't figure out how to make it work. Mostly I find this curious as opposed to frustrating, and wake up puzzled.
A couple of times I did dream that I was actually playing a tune on my own flute though, and that was cool. So I'm a perfectionist with a shred of sense.
Someone else went out on a bender and had 15 pints then dreamt about going on a bender and having15 pints then tried to get into the bog but it was full of people and he had to fight his way through and just got to the point of relief when he woke up ....... in the wardrodbe.
PaddyMolonysWig - that happened to a colleague of mine on a course. She only discovered where she'd "been" when she opened her dresser drawer in the morning.
The power of dreams... when I was much younger, in the 70s, I built a small portable stereo cassette machine (I couldn't afford to buy one and they were generally quite big beasts - this was basically a small mono machine and I fitted extra electronics and a stereo tape head into it. It was pretty amazing at the time, and I distinctly remember at the time dreaming in this amazing stereo sound!
I have a recuring dream where i'm playing but it sounds all wrong and in the dream i can never get it right. Its very annoying. I've had a few dreams where my whistles wont play any notes too.. Strange!
Well I have a have a nightmare that I wished was a dream . I flew in to Hobart to visit a friend and play at the New Sydney session .My bouzouki is in a fiberglass flight case , no need to check I thought straight to the session . It was in full swing when we arrived , lots of tunes , greeted a few friends and opened the case ,as I sat down and picked up the zook the neck fell off in front of everybody ,real session stopper .I had no instrument to play for the whole session not to mention the shock 8>( .
I used to have a series of dreams that I was going to play with various famous people, but I always woke up before the actual event had started, so I never had my moment of glory.
And then, this afternoon, Zina Lee turned up at our eclectic session, without an instrument ! So it came true again, I never got to play with anyone famous.
Of course, anxiety dreams are a way of your mind working through things that are important to you. How many people have dreamed about being back in school, but always unprepared for the lesson, years after they have left ? I dreamt that I was back in my old job, and actually said to myself "I don't work here any more, this is somebody else's problem !" That was very satisfying .
I've had a dream where I was carrying my fiddle up a steep hill, and someone I hadn't seen in a long time came up to me, and gave me a hug, and suddenly I felt that my fiddle wasn't there. Then someone else said "oh, no, it's really bad....maybe I can fix it". I started to cry and was inconsolable, and the person i hadn't seen in a long time (who my fiddle 'died' for) kept telling me I had french fries stuck to my shoe.
Does anyone else go completely insane when their instrument breaks? My brother slammed the door on my fiddle, and although it was amazingly perfectly fine, I can't remember ever being that upset.
Only dream of that sort I ever had was about being held up at gun point and both of my guitars were in my hands. I woke up as I heard a gunshot as I was running like he__ to get away from the fiends. Leter that same week, i realized that it was some sort of promonition as I set the case of my Gibson Flying V against the rear fender of the car and it slipped falling hard against the pavement. I heard a loud cracking sound (like a gunshot). I opened the case to see that headstock had cracked clear off the neck. And could see quite clearly that the break was not new but had been repaired at some point prior to my purchase. So, I was robbed but not by a gunman in a dark street outside a club but by the slime who sold this to me. If only they had put as much effort into the repairing the break as they did the repair of the finish to cover their repair.
To this day, I'll not carry two instruments into a club at the same time.
OK I had yet another variation of this recurring theme in a dream last night. I was, for some reason, washing somebody else's fancy car, a top-end Mercedes or BMW. Under the bumper area were some vent holes which had flexible rubber gaskets lining them, the rubber painted the same colour as the car (a very pretty metallic blue I might add). As I hand-washed these areas with a soapy towel the paint began flaking off the rubber parts. Then, I happened to lightly touch an area higher up near one of the headlights and a bit of paint flaked right off the metal.

Re: Instument Nightmares
I read about a man that dream't he was in the loo and downloading some crap, When he awoke he had but not in the loo.
It is probably due to stress.

Careful Screetch. I wouldn't start sharing your dreams on here. Psychologists like myself will have a field day on you.
Broken bow ... must be some phallic representation there.

You are just a perfectionist, and never satisfied with your performance.

Screetch:
Did you ever dream a new tune, and try to play it once you had awoken? Frustrating.
Djauque:
No doubt about it, clearly not a dream but a premonition. And crushing an Overton to boot!
He will have to go.
(Just kidding!!)
