As for half triangle sandwiches at the Trad Fest down in Ennis, have a look at the plate of sandwiches laid on by the establishment (I think it's the Bridge Hotel) for the musicians here! Mind you they don't seem to have supplied any of the black stuff to wash them down so life isn't perfect after all! By the way any of you from the UK Midlands, that is indeed Jim Lawlor on flute who was a regular at sessions in Luton, Bedford and other such exotic places back in the early eighties along with the Kennedy brothers, John and Barry. Does anyone know where the Kennedys are based these days?
Thanks CPT - that's an amazing response as I only posted 5 minutes ago! This is a great reel and now with the dots it will definitely get an airing at the next session I attend.
"Two for the price of one" - I've just followed the link above to the Raheen reel and found a link to another great tune, "The Cullenstown" at http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display.php/2996 which would go very well with the Raheen. Also worryingly noted that I'd commented on the Raheen back in 2005 but had forgotten - hope it's not the dreaded Alzheimer syndrome setting in.
Don't think so PB - there wasn't a mike in sight nor were there any foreign musicians sitting around pensively, instruments in hand waiting for the call to join in.
Nevermind the abscence of the PA -- as I said on the other thread -- that clearly makes it a "gig." When I look at this setting at appears to be similar to what was being described on the other thread.
To be honest it looks like a staged event for the camera, a Gig, But there is no way of knowing without seeing the advertisement, if there was any. For one its in a Posh hotel, there are no pints or audience. It looks to my eye like a prearranged Photo op.
I see a pint of Guinness just below the flute and guitar player at one point, but being ealy in the day, as they said it was, cups and teapots are common.
Looks to me as it was the wrong time of day for a proper session which explains the cups of tea. It looks very much like the Bridge Hotel where there were countless sessions during the Fleadh - in fact I counted 5 simultaneous sessions in that area on the Wednesday night of the Éigse week.
[Just to be clear, I don't care how Bannerman learns his tunes. I'm just grateful for his links to some great playing on the comhaltas site, and for his other good contributions here over the years. Besides, Michael is busy on another thread, tilting at windmills. ]
As far as I know Willie Fogarty was wandering around that afternoon with a camera looking for sessions taking place. He saw that group already playing in the lobby of the Bridge Hotel and asked if they minded if he recorded them for ComhaltasLive. No arrangement of the players, I don't think -- Willie shoots the video, sends me the tape and I post it on the Comhaltas site. Done and dusted!
Anyway, I played plenty of sessions in the lobby of the Bridge that week, so I can attest they were spring up all over the place ...
Name that reel !!
Name that reel !!
Have a look at http://comhaltas.ie/music/detail/comhaltaslive_232_5_session_with_teresa_larkin_and_friends/ which is a nice bit of music from Tullamore. The lads over at Comhaltas aren't too helpful in that they name the obvious "Lad O'Beirne's" reel but not the more unusual one before it. Maybe someone here on the Yellow Board can come up with the missing name.

My pleasure Bannerman--thanks for posting the link to that video - brilliant playing.

Re: Name that reel !!
So I'm wondering... would this be one of those "gigs" dishonestly labeled as a "session" that was being discussed on the other thread?

Re: Name that reel !!
So why isn't everybody jumping on Bannerman's case for using the dots to learn the tune?

Re: Name that reel !!
Go figure. Maybe he's a lost cause.
I've known this tune a while, but it was fun twigging the variations from the comhaltas video. It's a good enough recording to learn the tunes by ear.

...and bannerman clearly doesn't.

Re: Name that reel !!
I know that tune as The Murphy brothers. Taught by Angelina Carberry at the Agusta Heritage Festival last summer.
