The Chieftans have a nice Christmas CD...can't recall the name of it, but I truly appreciate the Elvis Costello song - it helps me get through the time with the inlaws.
I just received two Christmas CD's in the mail today. The first one is Matt & Shannon Heaton's "Fine Winter's Night" and the other is Eileen Iver's "An Irish Christmas". I haven't had a chance to listen to either yet but they both appear to have a mix of tunes, carols, and original songs on them. I'll let you know once I get a chance to listen to them as I will be playing them on my radio show in mid-December.
Canadian band the Mcdades with Terry Mcdade (their harper father) and there album "Noel" ... check it out ..... http://cdbaby.com/cd/mcdades3
and scottish gaelic singer Fiona Mackenzie whos just released her new album "Duan Nollaig" full of gaelic christmas songs.... http://www.myspace.com/fionajmackenzie
The best I have heard is by the group Dordan with Mary Bergen et al--wonderful disc. Second favorite is the very pretty Cherish the Ladies Christmas disc that came out a few years ago.
MacCruiskeen--What we are looking for is albums that rise above that admittedly hideous moniker, and are actually good!
Just noticed that Nfg had already mentioned the Cherish the Ladies CD above, in which case, make it two votes for the Ladies.
By the way Nfg, that is an unusual name you have--is it pronounced the way it is spelled?
Cannot go with you on that one either Mr. Bliss
Do you know how they got Margaret O'Brien to cry while Judy Garland sang 'Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas'? 2nd place goes to the "Fairytale". So you were close.

Re: Best Celtic Christmas Records
Brave confession to follow: I still listen to the "Irish Rovers - An Irish Christmas" every year. The kids love it.

My favorite is The Barra MacNeils Christmas album. There are 2 volumes, I haven't gotten the second yet, but I love the first!

I would second the Night Heron Consort for general purpose Christmas things.

Re: Best Celtic Christmas Records
There is only one, yes ONE, great Christmas piece of music. "Fairytale of New York". Absolutely the only contender.
