Shetland Reels (fluted)

Shetland Reels (fluted)

After a very good reception to the Ships set (full-rigged and new-rigged) last night, I think I want to learn some more Shetland reels which sit as well on the flute as the new rigged ship does. Any suggestions?

Also, the three up, one down bowing pattern works quite well tongued on the flute, but does anyone else have any other suggestions on any alternative ways of implementing this on the flute? Just for the sake of variation...

Chris.

I don't think Far From Home is a Shetland tune.

I used to think it was, but not anymore.

Re: Shetland Reels (fluted)

I didn't think of far from home as a Shetland tune, tho' it is certainly a session mainstay around here. Though now you mention it, and I've tried it, it can be played in a Shetlandy sort of style and does sound like it fits. Hmmm... Could be the tune for getting the rest of them to join in on the lastune of a set!

Recordings? Authors of these tunes?

Sister Jean is a fun tune played at a lot of different sessions. It is found, along with many others, in "Hand Me Doon Da Fiddle" by Tom Anderson.

"I don't think Far From Home is a Shetland tune."

The title says it all. It's not Irish or Scots either. Wherever it comes from, it never gets played there.

Re: Shetland Reels (fluted)

Sheila Coyle is a good reel, and the other piper at my session says it's a Shetland tune. As long as you can manage a G# somehow, it's fine on the flute.

Re: Shetland Reels (fluted)

Sheila Coyle's is not of Shetland origin, although it may well have become popular session tune there. for info on the lady herself, see http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/1040
