Since I am relatively new to playing this music, I was wondering what are the differeneces between a reel and a strapsthey other than where they come from geographically and their common time signature. Any clarifications for the ignorant?
In all honesty, I never noticed the mis-spelling till it
was pointed out.
Like not reading a question in an exam.
Se if anyone can do this task properly. it takes 60 seconds. Get a piece of scrap paper ready in front of you, then using a stopwatch, time yourself for the 60 seconds.....
Ready?
Go!!
1. Read the 10 instructions before starting.
2. Draw a large circle on the paper.
3. In the circle draw a head.
4. Draw a hat on the head.
5. Draw a feather in the hat.
6. Draw a bird sitting on the hat.
7. Draw another smaller head.
8. Draw a tall hat on this head.
9. Draw a flower on this hat.
10. Do only instructions 1 and 2.
Reels come after strathspeys in Scottish music (when played in sets) and a very very different. This forum is perhaps not the best place to ask about that type of music. This forum is mainly about Irish music. The "Highland" in Irish music is sort of a sloppily played strathspey.
To comment on what I just wrote. I am fully aware of the legitimacy of the "Highland" as a type of tune, but from a Scottish viewpoint it sounds like a not so well pointed strathspey.

Re: reel vs. strapsthey
I thought a strapsthey was a dance that involved lashing the dancers together with strips of leather............

Re: reel vs. strapsthey
a reel beat will "fit" a strathspey but one should observe the hurrumpdump bit. For the dancers it is a step with a skip then a step. easy!

Re: reel vs. strapsthey
Strathspeys are listed on this site, so why wouldn't this site be the place to discuss them?
Anyway, a quick bit of Googling reveals:
