ITM clothing choices...

ITM clothing choices...

Does anyone have a special outfit, shoes or
lucky set of clothes that
helps improves your playing or maybe mood at sessions?

Personally, I like to wear my Cameron kilt, large black rock'n'roll t-shirt (24 hour church of Elvis), blue suede Cuban heeled winkle picker Beatle boots and my long straight hair tied in a turban (usually a green silk pashmina).

Awesome. I'll keep a lookout for you.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

I think it's best to look just a bit shabby and threadbare, so I spend hours trying on different items from my extensive wardrobe of charity shop bargains to achieve just the right look before venturing down to the local session.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

Shoes are important. Breathable. A decent sole that's quite hard so you get a bit of bounce, but as quiet as possible also. And a decend point on the toe for kicking people out of time/tune/too loud etc.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

DJs, white shirt and black tie of course. What else?

Umm, sorry.... wrong website.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

A black shirt (or other dark color) because my bellows tends to blacken shirts.

I think Jeremy should delete any thread with 'ITM' in the title.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

Why, what's wrong with this discussion? (apart from the fact that it has been done before more than once.) If you go to The Temple Bar, Lewisham,
http://www.thesession.org/sessions/display/695/comments
you might want to try wrapping a tricolour round yourself. Then again, dreadlocks wouldn't raise an eyebrow there either.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

Ah yes, I agree with deleting ITM-entitled discussions though.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

I agree with Gaelic Mhill - shoes are of paramount importance. There's nothing worse than trying to keep a steady foot-tap in flip-flops. Also, gloves are a definite no-no, unless you're a djembe player.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

I beg to differ! Living in Florida and loving to wear flip-flops, I have mastered keeping time while wearing them.

The normal toe tap is simply not workable with flip-flops. It can be done, but you don't get any "oomph" out of it and it really just doesn't feel right, doing the heel rock back to tap your toes like you would in shoes.

Instead, the entire foot is lifted off the ground and stomped back down in time. You get a double wacking noise from hitting the ground and the flip-flop flopping.

So it's not really a foot tap with flip-flops, more of a foot stomp. I'd give it a try, it's loads of fun...of course, I forget it's not Summer and Spring 11 months out of the year everywhere else like it is here, so your flip-flip foot-stomp adventures may be limited.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

I wear clothes that can be thrown into the washing machine after the session as our pubs aren't smokefree yet. No fancy jumpers, skirts or cardigans.

# Posted on October 30th 2007 by kuec

Re: ITM clothing choices...

Of course, that'd be "flip-flop foot-stomp" not "flip-flip" though I bet wearing flip-flips would work too, if I knew what the heck they were.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

I didn't notice the kilt or the turban when you came to our session, Yhaalhouse.

I feel cheated.

Clothes... not optional?

# Posted on October 30th 2007 by drone

Hi Ho Silver, Chemo-sahby, my work here is done...

Ah! Yorkshire! I must have been wearing my Captain Scarlett outfit that day...or was it my Lone Ranger gear (or Sloan Ranger?!).
I'm sure it wouldn't have been the pale pink Coco Channel chiffon number coz' I save that for my visits to see the Gentlemen of the Blythe.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

I have some punk rock friends who love the music and come to session to listen all the time. Often they die their mohawks green and the girl wears this T Shirt that says "I [heart] drunken paddies" along with their combat boots and spikes.

Also, I'd just like to say "FOOT STOMP FLIP FLOP!" one more time because it's so much fun. Thank you.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

The Temple Bar is the place to be now. Honest.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

wooden clogs, in case you need a heavy duty foot tap to keep other musicians in time with you!

# Posted on October 30th 2007 by cathycook

Re: ITM clothing choices...

Hmm, I don't give it any thouht, I just where what I normally where. If I'm at a gig or festival though, usually a band or festival tee.

Here's hoping trad stays the way it is...no common standard as to what you have to where (like emo's, neds, goths etc)

# Posted on October 30th 2007 by TheBlueBandana

Re: ITM clothing choices...

Cathycook, that's a great idea. For the entire two weeks of winter we have in Florida (right around Feb. 1st) I'm switching over to wooden clogs.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

Lamh Trom,
Yes! I purchased mine from that shop in Portland, Or some time ago from that bonkers performance-arty woman.
I wanted a "24 hour Mosque of Gary Glitter" or "7 day a week synagogue of Tiny Tim" t-shirt to complete the set.

# Posted on October 30th 2007 by yhaalhouse

Re: ITM clothing choices...

Or my "Rebels Abu " t-shirt

Re: ITM clothing choices...

My sincere apologies to all those who will now have washboards showing up at their sessions.

To the washboard players: you must learn the tunes before joining in!

Re: ITM clothing choices...

With the recent talk of these washboards i was just wondering, would you prefer washboards or bodhráns at your sessions? :P

# Posted on October 30th 2007 by Joneser

Re: ITM clothing choices...

I agree, she was a very strange Artsy overboard type...The tour was fun. I had to buy the shirt...

Re: ITM clothing choices...

Oh...seriously. Very sorry here folks, the washboard is all in good fun, from the Cajun/Zydeco Louisana musical genre, not to be used in Irish traditional music

Actually, depending on the skill level of the percussionist, the washboard may be a better choice than bodhran, spoons, bones or shakey egg. [mandatory percussion joke]

Re: ITM clothing choices...

There used to be an old fella came along to a session we had, who had one of them. Bloody racket. Fortunately he finally got the message when he got slagged off for being the Tin Man from the Wizard of Oz. But that was after about 2 years or something.

The proverbial Monkey Suit for me. But then I come from the era where we still dress for dinner.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

Down here in California we just wear normal clothes, but a friend moved up to the Pacific Northwest (city not to be mentioned) and he said that up there everyone dresses normally but there seems to be an unwritten rule that each person must wear exactly one odd item of dress. So, one person is wearing jeans and t-shirt but is sporting a huge pink feather boa. Another is wearing jeans and t-shirt but is wearing a big strange hat. And so it goes.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

"each person must wear exactly one odd item of dress"

Like, one odd sock, for example?

# Posted on October 31st 2007 by ragaman

Re: ITM clothing choices...

I don't own any dresses at all, let alone an "odd" one. Guess I'll never get to go to a session there.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

I didn't know clothing was required?

Shouldn't the quality of the music draw all the attention...not the player.

Re: ITM clothing choices...

The key maniac really is being honest. The Temple Bar in Lewisham IS the place to be! I've never seen any dreadlocks in there though, most of the Irish people in the pub seem to be balding. I'll sport a multicoloured hawaiin shirt if anyone really wants to see anything vaguely exotic....

Re: ITM clothing choices...

The black t-shirt with the printed celtic design is obligatory for me.
For my barn dances, on the other hand, I'm always looking for a good waistcoat in the charity shops....
PS; Cathy, so that's why you wore those clogs...guess I was lucky to keep in time back at Dingles, then, or it would have been back to the chiropodist for me.....
