I am coming over to NYC from UK for a few days to support my brother in law who is running in the marathon next weekend. Can anyone recommend a musical instrument shop or shops where I can go and browse whilst the wives go and do their shopping. I particulary interested in old tenor banjos and banjo parts and string folk instruments.
I haven't been there in a long time but check out Sam Ash on West 48th Street. There are several stores in the area. They have a number of stores. I got my 12 string there about 32 years ago.
I second the recommendation to go to Mandolin Brothers on Staten Island. It's definitely off the beaten trail for a tourist in NYC. However, since the race starts on Staten Island, you can go drop off your bro-in-law for the race and then head over to the store. I have always referred to this store when describing it to friends as the "Fort Knox" of acoustic and fretted stringed instruments. (Have your credit card ready) I bought a Collings guitar there in 1997 and I'm very pleased with it.
