A technical pc question

A technical pc question

Does anyone know if Dell d610's have phantom power, I have a decent quality lapel microphone which I want to use to record directly to my laptop BUT it needs to be powered. Any suggestions?

A portable audio interface like Edirol's UA-4FX ~

There are others, Roland Edirol, Tascam, etc., for more and less dosh but this is a nice bit of kit for under 100 quid...

Re: A technical pc question

for that sort of money I could go buy a reasonable mic that doesnt need power. Basically what I am looking for is a clip on mic I can use to record with to send sound files to a friend who is too far away to play with. Cheap simple solution, it is one of those situations where the quality doesnt have to be good, but adequate to do the job.

Re: A technical pc question

Samson Usb mic CO3 or something, about 50 sterling.
But for what you want any lapel mic will do, as long as it dont need fantom pwr. maplins or the like. Argos?

Re: A technical pc question

I think its time to mention I live in New Zealand, Argos wont even send a catalogue here, let alone goods. The average wage is around $30 000 per year, thats GBP 10 962 at todays rate.

I have just ordered a Lexicon Alpha ($300) and a fishman pickup ($345), which cost in total $645 after the 15% discount I get at my local music store.

Re: A technical pc question

I thought you were pinched for dosh. Those are not 'inexpensive', so why flinch at a decent interface, which does more than just provide phantom power. At the prices you've mentioned Seinheiser has some great mikes, and since price is no problem, anything by Neumann, a personal favourite, but I'm not sure if they do lape mikes. There are also mikes specifically for what you mention, and with the needed 'sound cancellation' features, for probably under $20 your end of the planet... Why go for more if you just need something basic and for voice only? For that price you can even find some that are headset and microphone. Remember, with a lapel mike, you have to remain absolutely still or it will pick up your shirt rustlings and beard scrapings... ;-)

Re: A technical pc question

Also, to be realistic, not knowing what your situation is there, I got the Roland portable kit for around 40 quid, or under that, maybe 36? That would hardly break the bank for you. But, it seems your needs are otherwise. A simple piezo would probably do the trick?

Re: A technical pc question

I don't know if they still carry them, but Sony used to make a little battery pack that you could plug a 1/8" stereo jack into for phantom power. Mine says ECM-121, and I think it cost about $30.

I've used this same mic to record directly into the computer using the "microphone boost" setting in the Windows sound panel. Probably not as good sound as using the battery pack...

Re: A technical pc question

Recommended lapel/lavelier mikes, makes of microphone we've used ~

Sennheiser
AKG
Audio Technica
Shure
* Neumann ~ http://www.neumann.com/ ;-)

There are even ones with USB connectivity and I've seen some for under a tenner, with an earpiece...

Labtec makes useful inexpensive USB microphones...but there are loads of other variously named inexpensive products about that will handle your basic needs ~ to record voice ~ across the Internet or for saving as audio files to share...

Re: A technical pc question

Yes Gzeg, I've used Sony too and they are fine kit, and not in the stratosphere as far as pricing...

Re: A technical pc question

I bought second hand an Edirol UA-25 like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.es/Edirol-UA-25-USB-Audio-and-MIDI-Interface-Windows-Mac_W0QQitemZ130165863503QQihZ003QQcategoryZ123445QQrdZ1QQssPageNameZWD2VQQcmdZViewItem
It is a great box with a very reasonable price. I also bought a Sennheiser e845 mic. Total price about €150. A nice set, in terms of quality/price will be difficult to beat.

Re: A technical pc question

basically I need something for recording my playing, I avoid singing if I can help it, especially in spring says she with the runny nose. Essentially I need a setup with that can record cleanly so I can send sound files and use e-jamming. I dont want voice or external sounds coming through so I am taking as many steps possible to avoid that. The time has come to stop evading playing in public with bands with the handy excuse of no pickup. I think the time has come to start investing in some reasonable quality gear.

Re: A technical pc question

Ironically my original question was basically this. "Does the dell d610 have phantom power in the microphone plug?"

Re: A technical pc question
