I bought a set of strings in down town Cork City and they cost €9.95.I was just wondering could the good people of this site tell what strings they use and why they use them. I'd say that "just strings" place would be hard to beat for price. For GDAD tuning please...........
Regards
Eddie
I use D Addario EXP Mediums....Some good music shops have them, or ebay, or themusicroom.com.
They last way longer than other strings, without loosing the tone or colour, as they are coated with a fine layer of non-corrosion-resisant stuff.
I have found none better, but they are a bit more expensive, as you have to buy two packs for the Bouzouki.
All the best!
I use whoever's are available in loop end with the octave option, and then tune them GDae, or, if you like, gGdDaaee.
At the moment John Pearse's seem to be in stock at Hobgoblin, about £8.95 across the counter, I think. Remember, that is for ten strings.
The way the pound is against the dollar, it might be economical to buy from the US, even with the postage......
Eddie, I just sent you a long and involved email explaining how I do it, but to recap, real quick, I use an online string gauge calculator by Dan McMullen that lives here: http://www.pacificsites.net/~dog/StringTensionApplet.html
You can input string type, scale length, etc. And if you can get fairly similar tensions on all of your strings, it helps with sound balance and intonation. For wound strings, I think 22 pounds of tension sounds pretty good. The plain strings can be lower tension without sounding too floppy.
Eddie, Juststrings is a US company and you might just get caught for import duty on any imports, so you should factor that in before you order! I know the weak dollar makes the prices seem attractive, but you might find better value in Europe from someone like http://saitenkatalog.de/shop1/index.php/cPath/10000?osCsid=2c53e616a5879d998572d625d342e0ef
Their prices are generally pretty good, and you'll find string sets for your bouzouki no problem. Only issue to deal with is whether you need ball end or loops, my german aint so good, but I bought some Dadario loop ends there lately and after some ball addition (!) I got them to work nicely on my Foley. I know you drive a Foley yourself so you should have no bother with them. Guages I use are .011 .016 .028 .040 .

Re: Bouzouki strings /Gauge/type/price/etc.
I get my strings from Tony 'Sully' Sullivan (it's worth a look at his session tune books too - cheap with good chord choices):
www.halshawmusic.co.uk. He'll ship world wide and knows all about scale lengths etc.
Other than that I use Red Wing strings from The Music Room on my travel zouk - they're lighter and more twangy.

Re: Bouzouki strings /Gauge/type/price/etc.
I play a Phil Crump B-II bouzouki, 25.4" scale, with a Randy Allen cast tailpiece which allows me to use ball-end guitar strings.
I use gauges .042, .032, .020 wound, .016 plain, in phosphor bronze and I get them in 'bulk' from JustStrings.com.
I'm very happy with these.
