Related comment: I had no tunes in my tunebook for a long time, because I figured what's the point--I don't need the sheet music for those. But then I realized (doh!) it's an easy way to point *other* people to a list of tunes that I know, if we're going to play together sometime. And some useful info about them, to boot.
It only took me a couple of years to figure that out.....
Come on I_Fel, set your standards higher. Only 3 sigma....6 sigma is the target these days. Whilst a Cpk of 1..33 is acceptable, Cpk 1.66 or even 2 cuts a lot a crap (although my 6 sigma handbook says scrap) from either end of the curve. Or, try a Pareto analysis. Well, you asked !!!!
I've been thinking that a good way to let people know what tunes are likely to be played at your local session would be if each session in the 'Sessions' section had a tunebook. I suppose shortcuts to the tunes could go in the comments section. I'm going to do that for our local session I think when I get a moment or two.
For those who don't know (or care!) what paraeto (aka pareto) means, it's basically the old 80:20 rule - 20% of what you do gets you 80% of the results. Fiddle ("!") around with that formula and it works out that about 50% of what you do gets 98% of the results.
Now apply pareto to your music practice ... but make sure you've chosen the right 20% or 50% That might explain why some people seem to get by with apparently little practice. They're not paranoid perfectionists.
As as design engineer I have to work with it.......I didn't bloody say I LIKE IT !!!! (BTW I_Fel, using Cpk centres the results; just having 3 sigma is all very well but it can be scewed to one end). And anyone who really uses statistical analysis on ITM needs their potatoes counting.
Number of downloads to tune books

Re: Number of downloads to tune books
Yup,my point exactly- it gives you some notional baseline (right or wrong) as to tunes that everyone should more or less know.

I_Fel,
"

That's all very well but everybody has different ideas about the tunebook and its purpose.
See

and Llig's comment in particular.

Re: Number of downloads to tune books
Then you'll have all "the tourists", beginners, etc turning up at a session near you armed with a bunch or tunes "raring to go" ......
Boy, will you be popular on a Tuesday night in Sandy Bells!
Why do you think all these "wizened" old players can never remember the title of a tune when you ask them?
It's a need to know basis...

Re: Number of downloads to tune books
By the way, don't take the last post too seriously although I'm sure that there'll be some people out there who'd actually agree.

Re: Number of downloads to tune books
I would sooner they had a bunch of tunes and were raring to go rather that NOT have a bunch of tunes and were raring to go.

Re: Number of downloads to tune books
SeanMc- true, but since the list is basically a paraeto anyway, 3 sigma out should get 99.9% of all tunes
hmm, cpk,,, NOW I have to look at my 6s book...darn its at work and this is the weekend!
So what tune= 3 sigma???
