Phew after some 3 months waiting my Castagnari Kriss III came today and wasn't it worth the wait? They really are great craftsmen at that place. Every little touch is great and the reeds sound beautiful. I ordered a Kriss III in B/C, Cherry finish, extra stop on Bass, swing tuned and case. If any one wants to drool i have pictures here of it.
What a beauty. Have you a name picked out or shall we have a name the accordian contetst? I named my fiddle Bella because she is so beautiful...........now if only I could make her sound as good as she looks.
Antikhntr, Bella is the name of my guitar!! Well, actually, it's Isabella, but Bella for short.
The hammered dulcimer is named Raquel, the banjo is Geariod, and my whistle is Laer. (I'm all for the exotic names, you see)
As far as having a contest to name the beautiful new instrument, don't you think that would be rather hard without hearing it. Heck, I can't even tell if it's male or female by just looking at the pictures!
I need a name for my accordian, which just arrived after three months travelling around the world on a boat to NZ, in the container. Amazingly it is undamaged!
Congrats. Castagnari are a lovely box.One bit of advice. When you put it into the case tuck a small towel or heavy cloth in around the box. This stops little dents being made on the box.
Good Luck!!
Of course we name our instruments. All of mine have names. Even Yo Yo Ma has named his chello. It's 16th century Italian, of course very expensive but the name he chose is Petunia......how humble.
While we're on the subject of names, which instruments are male and which female? Fiddles seem to be female for some reason, but what about other instruments? I think boxes ought to be male myself, you know, square-jawed, muscular....
To the tune of "The Hot Asphalt".
I am a comely female and my name is Mary Flynn
A face to launch a thousand ships and my box is nicely trimmed
I play my box by evening and I play my box by day
But to play the box-and-banjo sure it takes my breath away
Chorus
I am a comely female and my name is Mary Flynn
A face to launch a thousand ships and my box is neatly-trimmed
On a recent date, I'll now relate, at a session where I go
Yer man sits down fornent me and takes out his oul banjo
"Do you like my Little Wonder?" "Ah" says I "no mind the size
But the way that you are playing it brings tears into my eyes"
Chorus
He fiddled with his yoke before the session did begin
And I asked him most politely, "Tell me, is your banjo in?"
Says he "No need to question, for when I'm in you'll know
For the sweetest music ever heard is the box-and-the-banjo."
Chorus
All night we made sweet music, all night we two did play
And it wasn't till the morning that he put his yoke away
Says I "My brisk young fella, we played so well we two
From now on to play my box alone, it simply will not do"
Chorus
Says he "My fair young damsel, your point is so well-made
For to play my banjo solo now, just doesn't make the grade
I'll pluck no more my banjo when there's no-one else around
Cos for now the box-and-banjo is the only game in town"

As Laitch has so comically informed us, 'box' is what you put your 'banjo' into..or play with...or, well, er...oh come on now, I'm trying to stay PG here.
Not being an Italian speaker I called my box Paul Soprani which of course is the English translation of Paolo Soprani. That's 'cos I'm a clever git !!!
Why would his wife take to destinations unknown. If nothing else, she should feel more secure. Think about the new box....
1. It's not a curvaceous and sweet young blonde .
2. It's not a red sports car
3. She certainly knows what is going on when he is playing it.
4. And she has to feel that no other woman put up with a box player.
When you think about it, a new box is a very exceptional mid-life crisis option from a spouse's perspective
Upmine, can you tell what type of reeds you have. I didn't find Castagnari page saying anything about the reeds for the Irish models ie. Ciacy - Kriss IV, unlike for the other groups. And congrats, a very beautiful box indeed.
Castagnari lists most of their accordions as having "hand-made type" reeds (tipo a mano) which differ from handmade reeds (a mano) in manufacturing technique, profile, plate composition and cost (a mano being the most costly) although the sound characteristics are similar. Look at the comparison chart under "Products" at the Antonelli site to see how one manufacturer expresses the differences. http://www.vociarmoniche.it/
Reed types are explained here, too. http://www.accordions.com/index/gen/ter/gen_ter.shtml

Au contraire! My fiddle has never had a name, she is only referred to as "Herself".

Re: Got my accordion today
I named my fiddle Ceolmharfóir, "music murderer" though the name sounds a little better, if less accurate, translated as Tuneslayer.

The thing her wedding ring came in? Her seats at the baseball game? The way she fights? Help me out here!
My banjos are neither male nor female, and other than "harp on a stick", I only call them by their manufacture names.

OK, she wasn't all bad, otherwise she would have shot the melodeon.
