Re: Doctors Say Smoking Ban Improves Music in Irish Pubs
Interesting article. Doesn't in the least surprise me - the varnish on my harp would stink of smoke for days after a gig in a smoky place - this isn't a particularly absorbent material! So goodness knows what it does to lungs, which are designed to absorb stuff from the air...
Glad I never started smoking and just wish the ban in England didn't take so many years after the rest of the UK did it. Typical lethargic English politicians, I guess.
Re: Doctors Say Smoking Ban Improves Music in Irish Pubs
when i was in Dingle i went to watch a great fiddle player called Aoife Granville play every week in An Droichead Beag. One day after the smoking ban i wandered in and she was playing the flute! I said when did you start? She said "oh ive played for years and years, i just couldnt play it in pubs because of all the smoke". She now plays maybe 60/40 flute/fiddle. And if you heard her her play flute you'd agree we were all missing out all those smoky years..

In the U.S., and probably elsewhere, Ban is a brand of anti-perspirant. I can't imagine smoking it, even if it does improve the music. And presumably it's dangerous to light the aerosol version. Have studies been done regarding the effects of smoking other personal hygiene products?

Interesting to know that traditional instruments are always bellows-blown.

"I seem to have mislaid the bellows for my flute ..."

I hope not - they ought to be attached somewhere below your chin

That's an interesting point about Aoife Granville. I think that is the girl who has played on recent Comhaltas tours. She is an incredible player.
