Session & Session Players Mapping

Session & Session Players Mapping

Following Rev. Pete's fantastic work yesterday, my buddy who makes and plays whistles has just gone bonkers with the whole idea. He's somehow got the session players map and a session map up on his site. Pretty wild, check it out:

Re: Session & Session Players Mapping

If you have fast computer and connection, you can have a real time session in cyberspace and save having all that travelling about and hassle in the real world.

Re: Session & Session Players Mapping

I stole the Rev's idea and put such a map on our session site. I put ours there for the purpose of helping our roving mate find convenient pubs to play at by allowing him to see where (work or home) everyone is coming from.

I just put it up.

Re: Session & Session Players Mapping

Hi all,

An extension of Pete's work that I have been wanting to do for some time is a map to active sessions. Pete prodded me into actually doing it, so thanks Pete!

Arising out of my expeience trying to find a session when business takes me to a different city, I have started a MODERATED google map that will locate all the sessions that people tell me about. The point of being moderated is that I want to keep the last updated dates accurate and prevent people joking around and/or spaming via the map.

Yes, I could find lists of sessions here and at thesession.org, but not knowing the local area I didn't know which would be near my hotel and which would be hours away. I thought a map with all of them on it would be handy so I didn't have to search each one manually via Google or whatever.

There's only the three sessions that I attend on the map at the moment, but you can check it out at:

http://www.parkswhistles.com/ITM/Sessions/Default.aspx

Please e-mail or PM me with the location, schedule and contact info of any sessions you would like to see added to the map.

Also, suggestions are always welcome.

The whole world is fair game folks!

Carey

Re: Session & Session Players Mapping

Gosh, I'm such a trendsetter! ;-)

wolfbird, we have talked about virtual sessions a number of times before. Ninjam is interesting stuff, but isn't suited for Irish music.

Re: Session & Session Players Mapping

I did a little mini-study a few years ago on sessions per country, I don't know if anyone remembers this one:

Re: Session & Session Players Mapping

I just thought of a nice addition. You can edit your pin in the map to contain a link to your member profile on thesession.org. I did this for myself and it works.

INSTRUCTIONS:

* Click on your username on thesession at the right (where it says "you are logged on as..."). That brings up your profile. Then copy the URL from your address bar. (Mine looks like this http://www.thesession.org/members/display/11048)

* Go to the sessioners map, and click on the map to bring up the secondary window.

* Zoom in on your pin, and click it, then select Edit from the popup.

* Paste the URL into the Link box, and save the changes.

Then when someone clicks on your pin, it will open a page with your session profile. (This is only useful if you have any information in your profile, of course...)

I'm still trying to figure out why the icons aren't showing up right...

Re: Session & Session Players Mapping

I can't do this at all, Reverend. :-( I can't even edit my pin. I'm obviously too stupid. Think I'll go and play some tunes ...

Re: Session & Session Players Mapping

benhall, the trick is to click outside your pin to being up the secondary input and editing window, and THEN click on your pin, which should then give you the option of editing.

I am not sure how it knows it's you to allow you to do editing. My first thought would have been by IP address, but that doesn't seem to be it. I bet it uses a browser cookie. So if you can get to the secondary window and click on your user and it doesn't give you the option to edit, then either your browser isn't compatible somehow, or you have cookies disabled or something.

Re: Session & Session Players Mapping

I did just research it, and it does appear to use browser cookies.

Re: Session & Session Players Mapping

Or your cookies are all gone.

Re: Session & Session Players Mapping

That's true, Tonya, if you "tossed your cookies", you're out of luck, I think ;-)

If anyone is still having difficulty, let me know... I am the god and supreme ruler of the map, and I can edit everybody ;-)

Re: Session & Session Players Mapping

Thanks, Rev. I think I tried all that, but it didn't seem to work, so maybe my cookies are defective somehow.

Ouch! What a depressing thought.

Re: Session & Session Players Mapping

Ahh, benhall, I felt sorry for you, so I edited your pin to put in the link to your profile page for you.

And while I was at it, lo and behold, I selected the yellow icon, and it changed it for you! So you're apparently now the only fiddler in the whole world! LOL

I gotta figure out why those icons aren't working... I don't REALLY want to go edit every single person :-P

Re: Session & Session Players Mapping

Nope, not any more, benhall... I went and manually edited all the icons (it's the A.R. side of my personality). So now, you're a fiddler in a sea of strings... sorry ;-)

Sessions & Players Mapping Project

Hello! You may have seen this a while back. A buddy of mine (cjp here) took an idea from Reverand Pete and created a session and session player mapping project.

Please stop by (if you haven't already) and put yourself and your session on the map!

http://parkswhistles.com/ITM/default.aspx

"The players map is public for updates so you can freely add yourself to the map. This also means some of the points entered may be there to be funny or misdirect you. It's public so treat it accordingly. The Session map is maintained by myself, and if you would like to add your session, send me and e-mail with the details and once I confirm them I will add the session."

Re: Sessions & Players Mapping Project

Thanks for the bump Ian. I found a cool tool to put dots on planet earth when someone visits the web site. So now there's three maps - "Players" that you can update yourself, "Sessions" that you can e-mail and I'll add your session, or wait for me to get to your session in the arcives here, and "Visitors" which is the globe showing visitors to the site. Check it out, the globe is less useful but more fun for some reason.

Re: Sessions & Players Mapping Project

yeah, I still don't have the damn players map working properly, so make sure you put your instrument in properly in the message field, so that I can periodically go through a d update the pin colors manually...
