Hello!
I recently moved to Cork from the US and am taking on a few private violin students. I was wondering how costs ran over here for a half hour lesson each week. I just finished a degree in music education and have 4 years of private and group instruction experience, if it makes a difference-it does back home.
Also, if you have any suggestions on method books available here that would be much appreciated. I've done some work with Suzuki, buy my primary training and experience is in group method books such as Essential Elements and All for Strings. One student I know is bringing a book she started with when she was doing lessons in Germany, but I don't know the title. Looking at mostly classical training, but folk music is so great to start little ones!
Finally, any suggestions on music stores around Co Cork?
Thanks!
The main music store in Cork City is probably Pro Musica, 20 Oliver Plunkett Street.
There is also,
W.D. Patterson, Violin Sales & Repair
Camden House, Camden Quay, Cork
Tel./Fax: 021 - 450 68 68
Mr Patterson, whom I met in Cork last March, deals in, and repairs, violin, violas, cellos, basses, bows and accessories.
Camden Quay is at the westward end, and on the north side, of Cork Harbour, by the waterfront on the corner of Knapp Square. It is a few minutes walk from St Anne's Church (of Shandon Bells fame).
I'd also recommend you link up with Cork Comhaltas - they may even be looking for a fiddle teacher for their classes. You'll find contact information over at http://comhaltas.ie/locations/detail/douglas/ and I'm sure Dáithí Kearney (an excellent musician himself) would only be too happy to help you.
I teach fiddle in Ballydehob , West Cork. The method book I use for very young beginners is Fiddle Time Joggers, by Kathy and David Blackwell, which gives them the basics of playing the instrument and starting to read music in a fun way, once they've got this they could go in a trad. or classical direction, I have pupils doing both.
