Instead of posting yet another "so where are y'all from" kind of thread, I thought it might be fun to visualize it a bit more. So I set up a guestmap, where you can place a little icon on a google map indicating where you're from.
INSTRUCTIONS:
* go to the map site, and let it load (URL to follow)
* click anywhere on the map, which will bring up a page that lets you input your location (For privacy sake, I would NOT PUT IN YOUR FULL ADDRESS! Just punch in the city or town where you live)
* put your thesession.org username in the NAME box
* put your MAIN INSTRUMENT in the MESSAGE box
* Choose an icon color as follows (from left to right):
Yellow - Fiddle
Dark Blue - Pipes
Red - Accordion, Concertina
Pink - Flute, Whistle
Orange - Guitar
Light Green - Bouzouki, Octave Mandolin
Blue-Green - Banjo, Mandolin
Dark Green - Bodhran, Percussion
Purple - Other
It will be fun to be able to visualize this, and if we get enough people participating, you may just find some new people near you.
When you look at the map, you can mouse over icons to see their information, zoom in and out, drag the map around, and look at the satellite view, just like a regular google map...
Unless it is real popular, I will probably take this page down sometime in a month or so, since nobody will be reading the old threads by then anyway...
Done, that is pretty slick, Pete! I hope everyone hops on, well done.
The icon sticks me in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico, but I promise, I do live on dry land and I do hold a weekly at my local Irish pub...on terra firma.
Yeah, it looks like it is configured properly, so the icon/color issue might be a bug with the map provider... Oh well... it's still interesting, even if you can't see the sickening spread of bodhrans and banjos across the globe
Great idea Reverend. Alas, I put in Bethlehem as in Palestine but it dropped me somewhere in the States I think. I don't want to read too much into that!
How easy can you be. I always wondered who else was out there. Nice to put some places to unknown faces. All of you from Ireland where were you when I came to hear some nice traditional fiddle all the way from New Hampshire This summer. NOT A FIDDLER TO BE FOUND!!! And it was not without doing alot of pub hopping & "research" to find you. Is the end of May an officail fiddlers holiday?
My first thought was "Reverend has a little too much free time on his hands"...but it actually is pretty cool. I hope some of the lurker types who don't post will put themselves up there as well. With 38,000 members, that map would be covered!
We were both looking for a quiet place for a bit of music, but the Yak milk beer and their farts, I just don't know... Maybe it will grow on us. I love the Yurts, and we have a couple of countries all to ourselves as far as ITM goes, so why complain, eh? And there aren't any critics, they love it, whatever we choose to play...
Really nice, Pete! Hey, I’ve put it on “satellite” and zoomed in on your icon. Wait, I see someone. Is that you? Wave. I think that’s you! Can you see me waving back? Hi, Reverend!
Well, 51 hits so far... Most of them serious, and only a couple of jokey ones... It will be interesting when Australia wakes up and starts chiming in a bit more...
Not a lot of people in Ireland at the moment.
And kennedy, I DO have too much time on my hands, it's true. But it's not like I wrote the software to do it myself. I could certainly do that, but I tend to not write software when people aren't paying me to do it.
The icons are weird. I don't know why it won't use the correct ones, and the red "pins" are actually placed at the top of the pin, I think, not the bottom.
And I think this map has a limit of 500 pins. So we're going to fill it up long before we saturate thesession member database...
We're in the Eastern frontier, along the Mongolian border... So mostly it's nomadic Mongolians we're entertaining. The Khasakhstanis wouldn't have anything to do with us at all, something about a western capitalist movie? Maybe we shouldn't have said we were from Britain?
ceolachan, you had a great idea!
What do we need all that strings in bouzoukis for?
Two strings is enough! This is the most important discovery since
peniciline! http://youtube.com/watch?v=LEXkY1rVMag
I thought it was a really good idea, so I've done it ...
... but now that I have, I can't see me using it - it's already got really crowded because of the way the map works. Would be nice if it expanded a bit more readily. I realise this is not your fault, Reverend ...
Hey, it won't add me. It seem to be like a board game, only one person allowed per city. Rather than kick Gzeg out of Calgary, I put myself in beautiful downtown Okotoks which is close.
I just zoomed right in on my house with the satellite imagery - the estate was still being built when it was taken and my building is one of the few that is there. If anyone wants to scoure the map then they might find my street! (I'll give you a another clue - there are three houses facing another three and the rest of the estate is rubble - happy hunting!
I tried to input yellow, but it came up red. Since I don't like the color yellow, I actually wasn't too upset about this. And then, since it was going to be the wrong color anyway, I changed it to my favorite color, turquoise. (Blue-green in the designation above, I think.) And if I decide to take up banjo or mandolin, I won't have to change anything!
For the time being, at least, I'm the lone turquoise fiddler in the NY area.
Heh, aikfiddler, I had you in mind when I chose that feature...
I have no idea why it doesn't work for some people. I guess if you have a popup blocker, that might be a problem, but my popup blocker allows that window to open.
Yeah, I tried to make mine purple, but it came out red. So just be aware that the person south of Reverand is *not* an accordion/concertina. I'm more of a Toby mug
Hey, that's a neat idea Reverend. What do they call these things where you combine database with geographical data - I know it's a type of of GIS but there's some other fancy web term for it.
I think people may be having trouble putting multiple pins in the exact same spot. Emily, try zooming in on Edinburgh and clicking right next to Mr. Gill to place your pin there.
And Jack, you have an alternate personality who is feeling a bit cold down on Antarctica. I'd be happy to axe that one for you if you like
OK, I went through and adjusted the icon colors manually for people that followed directions and put their instrument in the comment box.
The rest of you, you can edit your own by clicking in the map to bring up the secondary input/edit window. Then find your pin, click on it, and then select "edit". You can input your instrument type, and you can also probably adjust your icon by reselecting it...
