Techie query - I used to be able to download clips from Youtube for later viewing using a programme called Video Downloader. This no longer works since I'm automatically directed to http://uk.youtube.com rather than http://www.youtube.com and Video Downloader doesn't recognise the former address. Does anyone know a way around this or, alternatively, a different downloading programme which circumvents this problem?
I don't know MacCruiskeen, my free Realplayer pops up a window and asks if I want to download the clip every time I watch a YouTube clip. I simply choose. As for the clip, well, a great way to start a Saturday morning RAFLOL. Brilliant. Just love the historical aspect of it, too - the coming of the electricity. Big changes for everyone. Thanks fer that. Lovely.
Ye Gods I 'm old enough to remember Ireland in those days, and I een remember the Peter Sellers record when it first came out. 'A drop of the hard stuff' was taken from a track on an LP record (Parlophone PMD 1069) he made around 1958 called 'The best of Sellers' The track was called 'Suddenly it's Folk' and Sellers does all the accents. He pretends to record the characters in an English country pub (West country by the sound of 'O Arr' accents) Then to Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow where he becomes a Gaelic singer trying to outdo the noise of the Trams) and finally to Ireland for the Ceili Band. Incidentally the Ceili Band was genuine, but we never did find out what band it was.
Other gems on the LP where 'Balham- Gateway to the South - Party Political Speech - I'm so ashamed - The Trumpet Volunteer - Auntie Rotter - All the things that you are - We need the money.
I'm lucky enough, or old enough, to still have the EP in my collection.
MacCruiskeen, I usually download Youtube files by streaming them from Youtube and then looking for an appropriate very recent and large file in my browser's cache (I use Opera 9.5), dragging it to the desktop, renaming it and giving it the flv extension.
I've noticed that some Youtube files, although they stream and play on screen easily enough, don't get saved in the cache. These files are usually by big media corporations who evidently have a way of blocking them from browser caches and from other downloading facilities. But these devious tricks don't apply to the Youtube files we find on this forum.
I heard Peter Sellers being interviewed on the radio once. His natural speaking voice was quite plain and neutral with no easily identifiable accent. He said this made it easier for him to act other voices. He used to go out to pubs etc incognito just to listen to people talking and to pick up accents and phrases for future use.
Anyone know who was that solo fiddle player in the video? A middle-aged man in a suit (weren't they all?), only on for a few seconds but obviously giving a performance to an audience.
A Drop of the Hard Stuff
A Drop of the Hard Stuff
A classic recording from the 50's. Not much more I can say - the clip says it all really

Re: A Drop of the Hard Stuff
LOL - Sellers was brilliant, and like all stereotypes, there's always the wee nugget of truth hidden inside of it.

I can never hear the jig Tell Her I Am without thinking of that sketch, if it's the one I think it is (I can't get Youtube)!
