The Two Maids Were Mixed

The Two Maids Were Mixed

At last night's session, for some odd reason, the second time through of The Wise Maid came out as The Maid Behind The Bar.

Now, this is pretty embarassing, obviously, however I'm sure it'll sort itself out soon enough. Really I'm just fishing for funny comments. Anyone else ever have any amusing mix-up issues? This particular one ever happen to anyone?

I hope the maids weren't offended at being confused for each other like that.

Re: The Two Maids Were Mixed

Well, not nearly as funny, but a few weeks ago I was playing Drunken Landlady, but then stumbled into the B section of Tommy Coen's, then over corrected back into the Green Fields of Rossbeigh. Stupid A minor reels!

And don't even get me started on the B sections of Star of Munster/ Bag of Spuds / Down the Broom....

Sorry E minor reels - see I'm still confused!

Re: The Two Maids Were Mixed

I'll never forget the time we were playing Mickey Chewing Bubblegum and the seventh time through accidentally everyone simultaneously started playing the 2nd movement of Mahler's Ninth Symphony. After few furtive looks and we all tacitly agreed to shift quickly to YMCA and hope nobody would notice, but the bartender caught us and charged us double for our next beer.

Re: The Two Maids Were Mixed

LOL SWFL, we had the EXACT same problem tonight at our session. I called out a set with Wise Maid, and even played a couple bars so everyone knew what was coming. And the piper launches into Maid Behind the Bar to start the set. He stopped when we all laughed.

I have been known to put a number of maids together for a spot of fun, though! ;-)

Re: The Two Maids Were Mixed

Both written by Joe Cooley are they not.

Re: The Two Maids Were Mixed

Played by Joe Cooley (particularly the Wise Maid which nearly always follows Cooley's Reel in sessions) but I don't think he wrote either. Although one of the greatest trad musicians of all time, I'm not sure that he ever composed any tunes but I could be wrong.

Re: The Two Maids Were Mixed

Looks like you are right! well , ''the maid'' can be traced to 1850! so.......

Re: The Two Maids Were Mixed

As long as those two maids aren't confused with "The Old Maid" - they wouldn't like that :-)
The Tunes section is replete with tunes with "maid" in the title, probably at least a couple of dozen, so I'm not going to bother to list them. I've got some practice to do.

Re: The Two Maids Were Mixed

Watch out for the Maids of Castlebar which has a second part almost identical to the Barmaid.

Re: The Two Maids Were Mixed

Normally I prefer to see the Maids one at a time, it's much easier that way. They don't fight, get jealous, etc. It's a "what they don't know won't hurt them" kind of thing.

Thanks everyone for your support and humor, and yes, we were playing Cooley's first, which probably makes it all the more strange.

I wonder how the great Mr. C would have dealt with two Maids at the same time?

Wise and foolish maidens?

I've wondered sometimes about the title of this reel, and whether it has anything to do with the parable of the 5 wise maidens and 5 foolish maidens, the wise ones who kept oil for their lamps, as they slept, whereas the foolish ones didn't. So the wise ones were ready for the coming of the lord...ahem, as it were.
I don't know how this would go along with today's health and safety legislation though.

Re: The Two Maids Were Mixed

When I was first learning Maggie Brown's Favorite, in the last bit of the B part, I would almost always go into the theme of Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring. My teacher called it Jesu, Joy of Maggie Brown.

Re: The Two Maids Were Mixed

We have a clown insists on playing the Green Hills of Tyrone (back to Andy Stewart and the White Heather Club thread) - I always try to turn it into the slow klezmer bit of Mahlers 1st symphony.

The parable was about 5 foolish session-virgins who didn't practise and the 5 wise session-sistaz who learned reels properly.

Re: The Two Maids Were Mixed

What's the difference between a maid and a maiden?
(I don't have the answer, please advise)
