Just wondering if anyone had heard of these guys and if you know the tunes (and where I can get them) to a track of there most recent album Rubai entitled
BALLYBROLLY JIGS
the names of the tunes in the set are:
The North Star
The Ghost Of Ballybrolly
Mulineira de Santalla d'Ozcos
Yes I have a couple of CDs by them, brilliant, they spend most of the time in my teanage daughter's bedroom (the CDs not the group!!) We're hoping to see them if they ever come near Coventry UK
Daver - lucky you to have a daughter interested in The Music! Mine, aged 11, is more into the Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Avril LaVigne - both of whom, granted, are good at what they do. She once put a Dan
Does FLOOK not ROCK? I have Rubai, and it's great. The sound guy at one of our St. Pat's gigs had to order his copy as an import and it was $25. As far as finding the tunes, try flook.co.uk. The band is broken up as I understand, but I think someone still maintains the site, so maybe you could email and ask?
If Flook have broken up it's only been very recent - they were in the middle of touring just a week or so ago, I seem to remember from their newsletter. Hope your news isn't true!
I saw them last year for the first time. I was talked into going along variously by distant family and session buddies. Hadn't even heard them. They were wonderful! Every tune had that feel of a good session number when everything's coming out with magic, The music takes over the people playing, just for a spell. The most magical is when the casual listeners at the bar at the session are drawn to something happening in the music, isn't it?
Well - anyway - erm - Flook were a bit like that on the night I caught them. But I bet they get a good few of those.
You must go to a gig! Unless, of course, you play whistle, flute, guitar or bodhr
I've been reading the posts on this page for over a year now and haven't submitted anythin' so far! So here goes! I saw flook last year during a festival i was involved in and i must say that they were superb! I have both albums (rubai is playin' at the mo!) and both are spot on ! full of energy and all marvellous tunes ! if you haven't heard of them you must give it a go ! all are brilliant musicians, i saw brian finnagin at a gig 2 weeks ago and what a night! very inspirational !! Cheers !
I'm eager to hear this group for the first time. There are no sources for UK cd's in my area, Colorado, usa, maybe the Corr's but not many others.... I looked on "ebay" and found one disc, Flatfish, for $18.99 plus a lot for shipping... I don't mean to deprive the band of Royalties, but in the days of Napster, I could usually go out and sample a tune of two from most artists.... Anyway, as a drummer, I want to hear JoeJohn play, and my question concerns his age. He almost looks like a teenager... Anyone know?
Thanks yo. Those are nice samples, that drummer, JoeJohn.... I want to know more about him.... Actually, I have a nice list of Celtic that I am going to carry down to WaxTrax this week. That is hella-store for tunes. I like Lafayette, it has that crazy Airplane converted into a restaurant, I've eaten there,... got airsick. ... but not quite the quaint, cozy rural community that I first new it to be,,,, wow, many long years ago. I live in apt's across from Saddlerock G.C. so my young daughter and son can finish school... then, I'm moving to Scotland...... Gourock to be precise.... 2-3 years.... I want to have my bodhran and my knowledge of single malt down pat before I land.
Ah, then you should be hanging out at Pints, I'd imagine -- best collection of single malts I know of in Denver. Pete, my husband, doesn't think the restaurant in the plane is at the Tri County Airport anymore. No, Lafayette is more like a bedroom community every day. Still, the old town area is quite nice and still rather rural in feel. Pete works in Old Town.
Hopefully I'll see you at a session round town sometime -- which ones do you generally go to?
(smile) - I've been to Pints, that's where I discovered I was allergic to Brunnehabbhain (Isle of Skye).... not exactly allergic, but you know.... Zina, I'm planning to get started at Swallowhill, they have a sessions program scheduled for wed. nites starting soon. Need to get registered as a "drummer", maybe, to discourage other "drummers". From what I read on this site, we'll probably have nine bodhrans register and about five other musicians, hooha!
Ah -- let's see, isn't that Christel's deal? Shouldn't be too bad, then. AMF's rehearsal night is Wed night, so I probably won't ever get down to those...unfortunately. Well, I'm sure we'll bump into each other at some point!
I didn't intend to "hijack" this discussion, but feel very fortunate Zina, that you introduced Pete and yourself. I would like to see the group (AMF?) perform and learn more of the local scene.. Although I have the rather diminished forum status of "drummer", I am a good one (i.e. not a beginner). Would you be able to email me sometime? thanks.
Thanks for setting me straight, greenman! Now I'll take some of my own advice, check the flook website, and see if they're going to be anywhere in my neighborhood. Again, thanks for the 4-1-1, as the kids say.

There's also an interesting interview with the founding flutist (as opposed to a floundering footist like yours truly), Brian Finnegan, at http://www.firescribble.net/flute/finnegan.html
But what I understood from the way the liner notes worked is that these guys wrote a lot of the stuff themselves.
This, however, would not be the first time I'm wrong ...
