Turning Wave fest cranks again

Turning Wave fest cranks again

Just had a momentous week at the Turning Wave festival at Gundagai (Australia) - Ruth Boylan from Kildare was teaching concertina, and for three days eleven of us were injected with enough concertina wisdom to keep us going for a year. She's one of those sneaky legends... monstrously good player, brilliant take on tunes and seamless technique. Thanks so much to Ruth for coming out for the festival, and to the festival for bringing her. The classes brought a whole lot of concertina players out of the woodwork, and it was great to meet them all.

The festival's masterclasses run from Wed to Fri before the festival, and they're intimate and well-run. I'd recommend them to any Aussies, especially as it's so difficult to make it to Ireland for similar classes.

Had some great tunes on the weekend with various characters from all over - Lott's pub had a perfect front room and the publicans were friendly and into the music. Looks like the town will support the festival for years to come, which is great because it's not easy for a festival to please locals and festival-goers simultaneously.

Any festival that gets sessions right has got to be supported, I reckon!

Sounds like you guys all had a great time over there - wonder if Tom got back in one piece! Have to try and see if I can make it over for this next year.

Re: Turning Wave fest cranks again

I have a head full of buttons and two sore wrists... does that make me a concertina player or a stuffed toy doing a handstand?

To be honest, I'm not sure which one I am after that weekend - the world is topsy turvy and my head feels funny.

Do you need some dettol, BMac? For the nail wounds?

Re: Turning Wave fest cranks again

Totally agree with ya KatieB, late in the evening!!!! Hope you the drive wasn't too bad?! yes got home in one piece last night and back to work:( Didn't want to leave it was one of those great festivals with awesome sessions and places to go to have a quiet tune. If there is one festival you go to next year, Gundagai wont disapoint. Good to see the crew, we'll crank it up in a few weeks in Sydney.
Will catch up with you this week Donough!
Cheers and heaps of chewnes to all :)
Oh and KatieB, look out for jesus!....See you on the flip side :)

Re: Turning Wave fest cranks again

Tombo, I was actually more concerned that you might be bringing back some of that nasty Horse Flu with you from foreign parts.

Re: Turning Wave fest cranks again

Nice one Tombo! Glad you made it back in one piece - I had a long drive back through windy weather but managed to listen to Tim Collins, Noel Hill & Tony Linnane, Michael O'Raghallaigh, Siobhan & Murty, Providence III, Caomhin O'Raghallaigh and Mick O'Brien and Dervish... plus a CD called "Balalaika Magic". I went kinda nuts. In a good way.

Great to see you and glad you guys fitted in some mad tunes in the wee hours. Thanks be to the Couch Man I didn't get near that Glenfiddich!

My photo set from Gundagai is up at: http://www.flickr.com/photos/ovhrprod/

A bit all over the shop in terms of order, but there are some session pics there.

Cheers, Bill.
