Tragic death of Paul Phillips

Tragic death of Paul Phillips

My good friend and fellow musician, Paul Phillips, tragically died of a heart attack last night.

All Ireland and World Champion Bodhrán player, Paul was in my kitchen for tunes last night and died of a massive heart attack on his way home.

Words fail me at this time - I cant even begin to get my head around it.

I will post funeral arrangements as soon as they are known.

My heart goes out to Paul's family and to the many people who were influenced by Paul and his great style of playing.

Re: Tragic death of Paul Phillips

Breandan,
I didn't know you or your friend, but not that long ago, I lost a dear friend and musician that I had played with for over 10 years and it was devastating.

So please accept my condolences, and try to find some solace in your wonderful memories of the music you played with your friend..

Re: Tragic death of Paul Phillips

Breandan, sympathies to you and to Paul's family. I lost a friend and session mate under very similar circumstances, and the shock of the news was, as you say, devastating. Take comfort in the music you shared.

Re: Tragic death of Paul Phillips

Can't believe it. Teaching this year in Drumshanbo, spent every day after class around the lunch table in stitches at Paul and his stories! It was my first time to meet and play with Paul, though I knew of him for years, and i'm gutted to think i'll not get to repeat the experience.

Rest in Peace Paul

Re: Tragic death of Paul Phillips

So terribly sorry to hear of this. If anyone would ever think that this drum is no instrument (and many of you do), let them listen to Paul's playing, and that of those who felt his influence. There are no words from me other than we have lost one of the greats, that, too many years later, we will all realize the worth of. But I'd say this fellow was bigger than his own time and the realization of too many others. An influence that people will feel down the generations, and I don' think that's an exaggeration. Rest in peace, Paul, you're sorely missed.

All the best man,
Rob

Re: Tragic death of Paul Phillips

Shocking news. Didn't know Paul very well, but he seemed like a very sound guy. His poor family.

Regards,

Harry.

Re: Tragic death of Paul Phillips

Tragic News,

My younger brother got married in England over the weekend, and I only heard about it after the wedding. We were all very shocked and saddened.

Deepest sympathies from all the O'Kane family.

R.I.P. Paul.

Re: Tragic death of Paul Phillips

Hi everyone, I'm Paul Marshall, Paul P was my best friend and my work colleague. I am beyond heartbroken by his loss.

I have visited with the family every day as many here have done also - yesterday I saw him, he is peaceful, sleeping. He has a tipper in his hand and his drum is nearby.

I have opened up a book of condolences at bodojo.com for anyone who wishes to share any thoughts, stories, verses or whatever in honour of the big man. The rest of the site is off-line for now.

Unusually, words fail me now. There are no adequate words to describe the loss of Big Paul.

Goodbye buddy, it has been an honour to have known you.

Paul

Re: Tragic death of Paul Phillips

My name is Hazel Davis from Cavan.
Paul is a great man, and a brilliant Bodhran player. He was my tutor in Drumshanbo for the last six years. I loved his class, it was fun and we had great crack. He taught me lots of different sounds on the Bodhran and how to listen to the tunes. I am feeling very sad for his family and friends because they love him and must miss him so much.
I am missing him in my heart but he is watching me above and knows that I am OK and I be alright ,of course I am, and he knows I keep up playing the Bodhran and I use the stick he gave me.
Thank you so much for everything Paul. I will never forget you, Thinking of you always,

Love from Hazel. ooo xxx
