A complete load of trash, and absolutely nothing to do with
Irish Music. It would be very handy for wrecking goatskins
and knocking out guitar bangers.Whats needed at sessions
is musicians, you cant learn music by listening to someone
beating the C-rap out a skin or a lump of metal.
About a year ago, I saw a guy busking in the middle of Enniskillen with one of these. I had a chat with him and have now forgotten most of what he said about the instrument. Before anyone else says it........... another meaningless post from strayaway.
gooseinthenettles, that' too harsh. There was some real skill there. Yes, it's got nothing to do with Irish music - yet, but that may be only a matter of time, given the propensity for alien instruments to infiltrate the idiom.
No good for our kind of music, of course, but it's a pretty cool drum. Almost more like a xylophone than a drum. I wonder what kind of scale it produces.
I'm sure that my Granny used to bake bread in one of those. I always find that that the people who buy these sort of things are very limited in their drumming skills, and consequently after a couple of minutes it gets repetitive and boring. The same goes for samba drummers who walk along the street hammering seven colours out of a drum. However, as a drummer who knows the difference in a para-diddle, a single stroke roll and a long roll, I would love to have a go on the Hang.
It is sort of like a steel drum. As someone else said, there is some skill involved. I once met someone with a steel drum. Inside, the notes are actually random, all over the place. It's not anything like learning a scale on a violin, where each note follows the other. You have to memorize where the notes are, and they are just skattered all over the place with no rhyme or reason that I could figure out. I guess it just has to do with the thickness and shape of the steel.
It's kind of cool, although, it is the kind of thing that is often embraced by a particular culture that generally rubs me the wrong way. (The patchouli-wearing hippy types...)
Did anyone check out the related video with the guy who is playing it through the delay?
I think that the last guy on the Utube link did just about everything that could be done with the glorified dust bin lid, and when the novelty wore off it became boring. Brings back memories of 'Afghan coats, joss sticks, psychedelic lighting and shaky eggs'

And did you notice the thing that that clip was a video response to? Absolutely amazing. Never seen one or heard of one before, but aren't they great?

Re: Hang Drums - The Aliens have landed!
One thing I do remember is that the guy said that his cost £600. You could buy a strat for less........ more sounds for your buck, methinks!

A good bodran player?surely not, have we not got enough
messers trying to ruin our music?

Re: Hang Drums - The Aliens have landed!
You probably don't need to worry about it much until or unless you see a good bodhran player come your way holding the thing.
