Why do C.C.E in this day and age have segregation of Bodhran and Bouzouki I think it is a disgrase in this day and age. For example they are not asked to go on C.C.E tours and if they win the province on either they are no classes for them at Scoil Eigse.
What do you think?
Should someone have a word with the president of C.C.E, I really think so.
If this is not a real windup then I suspect that there will be the usual Goat-bashers' jokes before long.
At first I thought you meant that the Bodhran and bouzouki players were not allowed to mix with the opposite sex. Or was it to keep the Bodhran players away from the Bouzouki players!?
CCE tours usually use a harp for accompaniment if at all and if there was a singer she might play the guitar though I am not sure if that has ever happened. As for Bodhran I would have thought that if one of the CCE troupe played Bodhran as an "other" instrument it might get used in concert but they are not going to bring one specially for that alone.
I don't think it really is worth bothering the President of CCE about this!
Another BB on this site means that we need another abbreviation for you - BB and bb are taken, so how about B-B.
Bodhran-Blues, the vast majority of people who play this music never entered a fleadh competition, never went to Eigse "boot camp" and dont care for the neanderthal rules of CCE, so I dont think you'll get a petition going on this one!
And did you forget all the Sax players, the Shakey egg opperators, the coin-on-a-bottle technicians, the mandolaists, and viola players, who feel equally left out?
i think we need a new organisation!
Well, it'd be ditto for The Willie Week etc - I don't think they offer bodhran/ mandolin/ zouk/ guitar etc. classes. So maybe, the 'discrimination' goes wider.. or maybe it's just good sense.
Paddy Fallon used to play bodhran on USA/UK Comhaltas tours in the 1970s/80s. He's on the LP records. I also saw a piper "double-up" on bodhran at a Comhaltas tour in Motherwell in the early 90s, so it's simply not the case that the bodhran has never been included on Comhaltas tours, although I accept that it is not included as a matter of course.
Why should "someone" have a word with the CCE president? If you feel so strongly about it, do it yourself.
Eamonn Moloney (Tipperary dancer and flute player) who was on both the Comhaltas 2006 Irish Tour and 2007 Tour of Britain also plays bodhrán. I'm almost certain he appears on the poster for the forthcoming Comhaltas Tour of North America. Now why can't we get a fiddler on to the front of the poster - well if it's OK for bodhrán players to whinge, I can't see why us fiddlers can't do likewise!
if you had a 'word' with the president of CCE it would be unlikely to make a difference, if however you had a brown envelope for him then things might change.
From what I can see here the players which are picked are not the current all-ireland winners. I,ve never heard of the one,s mentioned above (+ they probably have Board Failte tatooed on the bodhran) and another just to leave you all pondering on how come a fecking Dance teacher and not a proper established player is not judging the competitions, Is it incase they have to pay them too much money. The could also pick backers from the accompaniment section.
C'mon B-B, get real and take your comhaltas bashing elsewhere. If you're telling me the line-up over at http://www.thesession.org/discussions/display/15095 is not impressive then you're on the wrong site. I don't know how many All-Irelands Martin Donohoe or Seán Ó Sé have but I wouldn't insult either of them by asking - sorry folks I'll try and desist from responding to this type of post in future but I'm afraid the last one sent me over the top!
