It don't mean a thing...

It don't mean a thing...

Sorry to lure you in with a mysterious title - this is, I'm afraid, nothing more than another tune enquiry.

I'm trying to track down a certain a fling that I heard played this summer by an a wonderful fiddler from Donegal, Tara Connaghan - of course, in Donegal, they'd call it a highland, but I have to call it a fling, because it's the flingiest of flings I've ever heard. It just....flings.

Anyway, I remember the first part, more or less (I think i might have nicked the ending from another tune):

L:1/8
M: 4/4
K: G
G>B d>e d<B g2 | G>B d>e d<B A2 | G>B d>e d<b g>e | d>B A> d B<G G2 :|

What happens next?

I searched through all the tunes listed as strathspeys in G, (and in A, just in case) and did a couple of phrase searches, checking some of the reels and barndances, in case it had been wrongly classified, or there was a reel version of the same tune (actually, it has distant echoes of The Duke of Perth). But I didn't have the paience to see it right through to the end (There are just too many ßlø0∂¥ tunes in this tradition! Somebody has to organise a cull! Bring on the digital pianists in their thousands!) Sorry if it's there in the database and I'm just being lazy (I'll bet it is - it's just, me and search engines don't get on).

So, David A, Slainte, Dow, Ceolachan, ... - please, if you have this tune, post it or direct me to it, if it's been posted already.

Thank you all for listening.

End of plea.

Re: It don't mean a thing...

It is. Thanks Dowser - your divining skills are second to none. Why didn't I think of looking at tunes in D? I *thought* I heard it played in G - but I'm probably mistaken as I'm sure I would remember all the high Cs and Ds that would entail.

Re: It don't mean a thing...

There's no reason why you wouldn't have heard it in another key. In G you could play it up from the A-part of the D Major setting, then drop down for the B-part, avoiding the need for a change of position... ;-)

Dow must be confined in his room because of APEC conference being held in Sydney. Well, it's OPEC in Austria according to Mr. Bush: http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,22378059-5013109,00.html

Perhaps he's not as used to standing upside down as the long-term residents.

Re: It don't mean a thing...

Ceolachan - You've been quiet of late. Good to see you back.

You *could* drop the B-part down an octave, but I don't think that's how it went when Tara played it, so it probably just got accidentally transposed by my neurohardware at some point during the remembering process. You could play the whole thing in G in the low octave (on a stringed instrument - or a baritone flute). That would be nice - very Donegal.

This, by the way, is NameChangesRConfusing posting as mousemusic - I only notice after submitting the last comment. I'm using the PC upstairs instead of the Mac downstairs.

"I only notice after submitting the last comment"

I meant to say "noticed".
