CCE getting paid in advance for Fleadh Cheoils by local business?

CCE getting paid in advance for Fleadh Cheoils by local business?

I have heard it said that the CCE get money from businesses in towns where Fleadh Cheoils are scheduled to happen. I have also heard it said that the CCE choose the location of a fleadh according to how lucrative that location promises to be.

For example:

'They wouldn't give them the fleadh again in such a place cause they wouldn't pay them the money'

Is this true?

Welcome to the new Ireland where capitalism and greed have replaced all known traditional values. Fortunately, for readers of these pages, I do not have time at this moment to post an in-depth analysis of this situation - a few of us still have to do an honest days work.

Re: CCE getting paid in advance for Fleadh Cheoils by local business?

According to Goldhawk in the Phoenix magazine (issue? 2005)

"Comhaltas regularly claims to have 400 branches even if some of these are very small indeed. Nevertheless, the organisation is a very successful one and although the accounts are not published, Goldhawk can reveal that there were accumulated profits of E1.5 million at the end of last year. "Wages, pension, travel and subsistence" amounted to E550,000 (including a top-up sum for pensions). The biggest single element here would be 0 Murchu's salary although the senator refused to elucidate Goldhawk on the amount he takes out of his organisation every year. 0 Murchu's right-hand man in Comhaltas is Seamus Mac Mathuna - hubby of anti-abortion firebrand, Una, and father of Youth Defence's Niamh Nic Mhatuna. The director general himself is also an outspoken anti-abortionist, both in the Seanad and in the pages of Treoir."

So how much 'sponsorship do they get? and where does it go?

Ireland used to be the "land of saints and scholars"; now it's the "land of stocks and shares".

Comhaltas is run by politicians, not musicians and for that very reason it is bound to be corrupt.

Do they allow girls in short miniskirts to do a bit of the ould tiny fiddlin at sessions or would Youth Defence move in and sort it out?

Do you think that tinyfiddler would win the all ireland (fiddle comp) in her mini?

Re: CCE getting paid in advance for Fleadh Cheoils by local business?

An All-Ireland is really lucrative for the town so I guess it's only fair really that CCE get some sponsorship money from the town. Having run the All-Britain this year (and to be honest there were less than 10 of us trying to do EVERYTHING) I realise how damn ridiculously expensive it is to run a fleadh. For the 6 months previous to the fleadh we thought we were not only going to bankrupt our branch (Preston) but also the region (North) and the province (Britain)!!!!! You have to pay for so much and the places you try and book charge daft amounts. We had to find money for adjudicators flights, accommodation and food, medals, venues-a lot!, helpers' food, programme printing and a lot of other smaller things too. A lot of it had to be paid up front so we were basically begging for money. We had real difficulty getting sponsorship money. Preston council couldn't be arsed, arts council gave us about £100 (peanuts!) and although some people gave us their payments for competition sponsorship and adverts in the programme upfront the majority didn't. All our money came from the province and the number of times we had late night online discussions about where else we could possibly get money from to pay a bill needed the next day is ridiculous. Sometimes we thought that we'd just have to ask people on the commitee to fork out their own money so we could have a fleadh at all. Arg! And before anyone comes on here and says that we weren't organised or no one knew how to run a business then you can know that several members of the commitee actually ran their own, successful businesses for years and were very on the ball about everything. It's just ridiculous. We're not entirely sure whether we've broken even yet as we are STILL getting late payments from people.

I dunno, I would be surprised if the All-Ireland makes a profit. Anyway I think it's perfectly fair for them to expect support from the town's council. What would be the point of taking the fleadh to a town that didn't want it and having to fight the council all the way. Much better to go somewhere where the town recognises how much money it will bring to the town's economy and give a little sponsorship towards it.

Fair enough I think!

Why don't they give you some of this annual profit?

I heard that CCE announced a six figure sponsorship fee from the town of Tullamore. I presume a profit was made. Maybe your town is different?

Re: CCE getting paid in advance for Fleadh Cheoils by local business?

As someone who's been around fleadhs for many a year I know it's unusual to make a profit and normally a struggle to break even. In those rare instances where a profit is made, it's normal to plough that back into the next year's event.

Re: CCE getting paid in advance for Fleadh Cheoils by local business?

What about the 1.5 million profit in 1994 (and presumably subsequent years)?
None of you have answered any of the questions posed by the quotation from the Phoenix Magazine.

Are you running around raising funds for the CCE cause while headquarters are sitting on a fortune?
Are you so dedicated to the cause that this doesn't occurr to you?
The quotation was reiterated (repeated) because neither of you answered its implications.
Is that clear enough for you now Bannerman?
