I am going to studying Irish banjo in NYC next month and I am in need of a tenor banjo. Can anyone make any suggestion as to a good starting instrument under $500. I have been looking at the Goldtones, but was wondering if anyone could help me.
Or....if anyone out there in the NYC area is looking to sell an instrument.
I have owned Goldtones and their CC Irish Tenor is a so-so banjo well within your price range. You can help the tone considerably by putting heaver gage strings on it, otherwise it can sound quite thin and alltogether unsatisfying.
I had a CC-IT too... It was playable, but the tone wasn't great.
I generally recommend vintage instruments over the new ones. You can buy a decent banjo that will sound a lot better for $4-500. And if you're into deal hunting, you can find some even better deals out there.
Bernunzio is a good dealer. Vinnie at 4stringbanjos.com is a good dealer too, but it doesn't look like he has much in the way of tenors at the moment.

Re: looking for a banjo
Vin, I sent you a private email about a Vega that I was planning on putting on eBay in the next week sometime.
Feel free to ignore it if you're not interested
