Can anyone give me any information on this tune? Like when it was written, anything about the composer Henry Tolhurst or just any geneal info on it?? Thanks very much!
Hi jo!
The Fiddler's Companion (which can be found on the ceolas website) says that it was first notated by Ed Bunting in 1839, and that he first heard it from a Miss Murphy of Dublin.
Here are some awfully nice lyrics for it:
There's one that is a pure as an angel,
As fair as the flowers of May,
They call her the gentle maiden
Wherever she takes her way.
Her eyes have the glance of sunlight,
As it brightens the blue sea wave
And more than the deep sea treasure
The love of her heart I crave.
***
Though parted far from my darling,
I dream of her everywhere,
The sound of her voice is about me,
The spell of her presence there.
And whether my prayers be granted,
Or whether she pass me by,
The face of the gentle maiden
Will follow me till I die.
Gentle Maiden
Gentle Maiden

Re: Gentle Maiden
It's a waltz in G major and sounds very similar to one of the O'Carolan tunes - can't remember which though.
Also known as The Child of Dreamland and composed in the mid 1800's.
I've never heard of Henry Tolhurst - he sounds more like a baptist preacher, than an Oirish notesmith.
