Re: The Dark Island

Hi Iwood.
Go to http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/cgi/abc/findtune?P=the+dark+island&F2=find+%28wide%29&L=100
When you get their just click one of the GIF buttons and the notation should appear.
If you've not come across this site before its always my first port of call when looking for a tune.

All the best PP

Re: The Dark Island

I've updated the guidlelines for discussion submissions to include the following:

"If you are looking for a tune, please look in the Tunes section first. If you can't find it there, please try looking for it at other sites.
Only after you've thoroughly searched all the other options, should you even consider posting a tune request here."

Now, for pity's sake, people, would you please follow the guidelines.

I don't want to see any more of this:

[Start of so-called discussion.

"I'm looking for tune XYZ"

"Try http://trillian.mit.edu/~jc/cgi/abc/findtune?P=XYZ";

End of so-called discussion.]

Re: The Dark Island

Jeremy, would it be possible/desireable to start a separate discussion section in the "tunes" area? I know that people can already comment on specific tunes there, and for sure they ought to search before they ask, but even so, there's no way to comment on a tune that you can't find, and that would keep such discussions off the "discussion" site, if that's your intention.
Just a thought, because the violations seem to drive you crazy!

Re: The Dark Island

I think that's a great idea of Cuch's. One problem is, it's kind of pointless to start a discussion about a tune unless it's *just* been posted, because nobody will see your comments unless they happen to catch them floating past in the 'new comments' view. I think that is partly why there are so few comments attached to the tunes, which Jeremy is obviously trying to encourage. I suppose the difficulty is that you'd end up with very interesting discussions about particular tunes, which aren't attached to the tunes in the database...
When people stumble across the site and post one of these offending queries, I'm sure they're just flushed with excitement at what they've found, and haven't read the small print or got a feel of the place yet. I'm glad I didn't start off on that foot, I might have been scared off, and that would be a shame - I really enjoy this site and I'm grateful to Jeremy for providing it.

Re: The Dark Island

Absolutely. You know, I've visited similar sites, or at least similarly formatted list serves or discussion groups, and this one is really the best-organized. Most of the time, discussion threads are are cumulative in such a way that you end up reading the same posting several times just to get at the new stuff, or everything is segmented so you don' t connect the answers to the original questions, or whatever. This one is so easy, it's addictive!
In fact, I've got a proposal for sessioneers: This St. Patrick's Day, let's all do a worldwide toast to our esteemed host. Kind of like the Great Guinness toast, that wonderful worldwide marketing scheme that the good people at St. James Gate cooked up. Only we all should do it all over the world on Jeremy's behalf. Let's say at 10 p.m., by whatever clock is on your local pub wall. It'll be the gulp heard 'round the world.

Re: The Dark Island

Lucky you! - some of us are working.
If I survive this gig I'll have more than one to calm the nerves.
Anyway is that 10pm GMT?

Re: The Dark Island

There will be at least one hoisted that evening at 10pm on Salt Spring Island for Jeremy. Thank you Jeremy for this site.

Re: The Dark Island

Great Idea! Now, don't you think 10 pm LOCAL time would be preferable? That way the slurp would repeat itself 24 glorious times. 10pm GMT invites some session members to start their day with a pint? ...

Re: The Dark Island

I'd think local time would make more sense, else some people would miss St. Pat's Day entirely.
Danny, don't worry about missing it. I'll have an extra one for you -- but only if you promise to make it up when you get off work!

Re: The Dark Island

...as long as we don't have to wait until 10 pm to start slurping. Gra5ity, Guinness *is* a breakfast food, but I'll bend my elbow again at 10 pm.

Re: The Dark Island

Thank you all. Very kind of you to raise your glasses :-)

Back to the original question of how to handle tune requests: I've been meaning for some time to get around to having a tune request feature built in to the "Tunes" section.

Here's how I see it working:

You search for a tune. You get no results. Some hints appear about how to refine your search and finish with a question asking if you'd like to request this tune.

If you answer yes to that question, your search gets squirreled away.

Now, if someone submits a tune and the title matches the search request, you automatically get an email telling you this.

The only other thing I would add would be a list of recently requested tunes (this would be a tab on the "Tunes" front page) showing, say, the last twenty tunes requested (with the option of looking further back).

This would be for the kind souls looking to help their fellow members by posting a requested tune.

Then, I would ban tune requests completely from the discussion area.

Sound good?

Now all I have to do is get around to building it.

Hmmm... there's goes my St. Patrick's Day. Only kidding.

Re: The Dark Island

Thus, this site goes from being the best Irish music site on the net to ...What? The best-best, of course.
Here's to Jeremy! (Oh, wait, it's not 10 p.m. Monday, yet...)

THAT SOUNDS GREAT!!
Thanks Jeremy,

The Dark Pint

Is it possible to retrospectively re-name a thread with respect to what becomes its dominant subject?

Re: Tune Requests

Jeremy, that sounds like a terrific system. Having one place to check for tune requests should be an incentive for some of us to post more often, knowing that someone out there wants the tune. Otherwise, posting a tune sometimes feels like cutting the string on your kite--it quickly sails into the wild blue archival yonder.

On the other hand, we'll need extra stern language to dissuade people from posting the abcs for tunes they don't play themselves, just to fulfill a request.

Thanks again for all your hard work and innovative site design!

Re: The Dark Island

Just when you think this site can't get any better Jeremy proposes a great new dimension for the "Tunes" section. This change really kills two stones with one bird. The "Tunes" section becomes more useful and the "Discussions" section focuses on, well, discussions. Now that's what I call creative problem solving.

P. e-S. Will, I've been told a pint Guiness is higher in protien and carbohydrates than a two martini lunch.

Dark Island

Thank you all for your pointer to finding Dark Island.
I'm obviously not very popular with Jeremy - never have been.Shame, because this is a GREAT web site where he obviously puts in a great deal of time. Thanks for that Jeremy.

Re: Dark Island

Oh dear, when he finds you've started a new discussion on the same subject sparks are going to fly and my computer will spontaneously combust.
