I've been downloading tracks from eMusic for a couple of months now. I recon eMusic is great for someone where Irish traditional music is not readily available except online. You guys and gals talking about tunes, if I don't know them, I look them up and download somebody's version. So far I usually find a track of the discussed tune without too much trouble. However, what I am having issue with is the fact that the track listings and the tracks don't seem to be syncronised, ie I download a track labelled The shores of Lough Gowna and end up with something else. Very disconcerting. I wonder how many people have ended up playing the wrong tune with the right title. If you know the tune, of course, you know its wrong, but what if you don't? ... and and if you go back and download the right tune with the wrong label you end up with two mislabelled tracks and things are starting to get messy. Anyone else having a similar problem?
... except if you're trying to learn a particular tune.
Can't say I've had that problem on eMusic but then I've not gone looking for the Shores/Banks of Loch/Lough Gowna.
The shores/banks of Lough Gowna is not the only one I've recognised as wrongly titled. The Kathleen Collins track which starts with Paddy Ryan's Dream is another that is wrongly listed. What I downloaded wasn't Paddy Ryan's Dream, it was something else. There are others. Its the fact that the tunes do not correspond to what is listed in the tracks listings is the problem.
Of course llig I agree that names don't matter for tunes in a session, just play the tunes and stuff the bluudy titles. We've been here before and quite frankly I couldn't be bothered arguing the toss with you Mr llig, but if you have gone to eMusic to find a particular track for a particular tune (because people have raved about it on the yellaboard - good on ya guys and gals, then it does matter when the listed names and the right tunes don't correspond. Simple. a) You have inadvertently downloaded the wrong tune; and b) the track you want is called something else and you have to find it in what is probably a maze of mismatches. ... and unless you already know the tune, how can you tell?
Actually this sort of thing does matter. . . if you DL an album, fall in love with the tunes, and learn several of them, you will refer to the tune (or more than one) with the incorrect name. . .thus contributing to a multiplicity of names for each tune, and tunes for each name.
I've noticed something similar on my Ipod actually. . . . the only blot on the face of a marvelous invention.
I downloaded Kathleen Collins’ album from eMusic too, and apparently the tracks were listed incorrectly when the album was made, not by eMu. Here’s the correct listing. (By the way, if you look at the recording listing here at theSession.org, this is explained, and there’s a permanent link to the right listing as well.)
Most of my eMusic albums seem to be labeled correctly. I don’t think eMu puts the track titles on themselves. They use whatever is supplied by the labels. As someone mentioned above, there are 2 different tunes (at least two!) with Lough Gowna in the title.
The (Sheanachie?) Kathleen Collins CD is also mislabeled.
It looks like Zhenya has it correct ordering above, but it wouldn't surprise me at all if eMusic simply took the (incorrect) track listing off the CD jacket. After all, if seanachie couldn' t be bothered to get it right, you'd hardle expect eMusic to...
Thank you all for that. I actually have that original Shanachie LP of Kathleen Collins bought in '76 when it first came out. Much much loved and worn with the playing of it back then, but sadly confined to the draw with some other vinyl treasurers as I haven't a turntable anymore to play them on. The tunes listing on the LP corresponds with yours Zhenya. Thank you so much for that. Had no idea about the track listing problem with the CD. Why would I until now?
Hey there P-K, that's a good idea, but that's the whole point of going to eMusic - to get an MP3 of someone playing the discussed tune as a much better alternative to a Midi.
... and, okay, now I realise the The Shores of Lough Gowna on the Patrick Street CD is another tune, not the jig, altogether, thanks wormdiet. Phew. ... and thanks Georgi, i won't blame it on eMusic any more. Shanachie has had a long time, decades, to correct that mistake, hey? I'll stop complaining now, and go back to listening to the tracks I've DL. Great stuff.

Re: eMusic trad tracks
if the name is wrong, rename it if you know the proper title. if you dont know the title accept that the given title may apply to a couple of tunes.

Re: eMusic trad tracks
P.S.
I copied the track listing out of ITunes in table form, so what you have there is:
Track title, track time, track number, tune type
in that order.
