... I just bought a madola and this song is the reason why. The problem is that I don't know the chords. Can anyone help? I'm much more partial to the Planxty version ....
See if you can find a copy of the "Songs of Planxty" - a green softback, 1976 from Mews Music Ltd., no ISBN visible.

I've just dug out Planxtys' "Cold Blow And The Rainy Night" album (vinyl) for the first time in years and they don't actually play any chords, just a mandola and a bouzouki tinkling away counter-melodically behind Johnny Moynihan's voice. That's what i always liked about Planxty, they were the first band to free these songs from the chordal straitjacket.Shantalla did a good version too,you can hear a bit of it here. http://www.mp3.com/albums/408959/summary.html
IMHO the Planxty version and straightforward major/minor chords don't go together very well. This is not to say that the suggested chords don't work. I find Jeff Moore's chords (DADGAD?) more interesting. Can anybody enlighten us to what he really plays?

Re: P stands for Paddy
Blast - the spacing went pear shaped in the above, still I expect you'll be able to sort it out. PM me if you want any more details.

Re: P stands for Paddy
There's a great version on Liadan's fine debut album, but perhaps not a useful source for chords, as it's a cappella...
