Well the box attempt didn't go so well, the one I origianally ordered from the cheapo shite factory was (surprise surprise) cheap shite. Sadly I lack the funding to get a decent beginners box so I'll have to wait a bit a attempt to borrow from box players at sessions. But I did happen to find a luvely hundred year old strad copy made in germany. It has the warmest, most amazing tone that even makes me sound good.
Guard the fiddle with your life, and enjoy !
Some of these old German fiddles are very satisfying instruments to play.
As regards the box - it's worth remembering that a good instrument repays the initial investment many times over in pleasure derived and given. It is thus worth while to try and stretch your budget to get the best. I keep trying to persuade my SO of this, but she just disses it as Instrument Acquisition Syndrome.
Actually, I have one of those lovely Strad copies for sale if anyone is interested. It has a Charles Beare chin rest which seems to suggest they sold it as a trade violin. It used to belong to the Earl of Dudley. My great grandmother bought it at a sale. Lovely strident tone. Please e-mail if interested. Otherwise I'll put it on e-bay soon.
I was given one of thoses German Strad copies a couple of months ago. I don't know if it's 100 years old but it's pre-WWII. Lovely dark and warm sound. Yes does it make anyone sound good!
I'd be interested in finding out how much your 100 yr old strad copy cost you as I say a copy of one in a shop in Galway this summer for 3000.00 euro. Yep 3000.00.
