ABC Voices

ABC Voices

I am trying to learn harmony.
One way is to play along with a recording of the lead melody.
I have harmony parts written out for Seamus O'Brien's;

Last night I typed the melody & harmony voices into ABC, & listened to the MIDI playback.
The MIDI synthesizer is funky but it does help me work things out. Enough of that here is my question;
Can you do voices in ABC Navigator? It works fine in my other ABC programs but Navigator does not seem to like voices.

Re: ABC Voices

No. You can do chords as for guitar, but not voices. Sorry. In this it tends to reflact the Irish Traditional music it was designed for.
Stave programs like "Finale" will do voices. It's more geared towards Classical music.

Re: ABC Voices

Finale will do about anything you want, but it costs. As I spend most of my money on beer, I've been using a free trial version for years now that has quite a bit of features removed. You can probably still download it. I have written out parts for two instruments using it.

If you have access to a piano, that works pretty well.

Re: ABC Voices

Thanks for the tip on Finale. I am using AbcEdit to write out the voices. Some of my friends use Navigator & I wanted to see if it would work for them as well. Now I know.
Anyway the MIDI in most Abc programs is not so great & adding instruments is really pushing things. I see Finale uses sound fonts which I am just discovering.
Cheers!

Re: ABC Voices

I'm using abcmus and it is possible to add a couple of voices, I don't know exactly how many. I've not found out yet how to define the instruments playing the voices and at which loudness.

Re: ABC Voices

People tell me they like the playback features on AbcMus.
The program should have playback options where you can assign instruments & volumes to each voice.
AbcEdit has it under an "Options" tab
You can also type it in as a command using %%
This is how I can playback the first line of 'Seamus O'Brien'
in that way. It should work on most abc2Midi applications.
Of course the best way is to figure out the MIDI/playback options on AbcMus. Thanks!

Re: ABC Voices

2 for 2. 1st Navigator now AbcMus. I downloaded an unregistered version of AbcMus & the commands above
do not work to assign instrument patch to all 3 voices.
Sorry about that swisspiper. & I really cannot figure out how to set up instruments w/the options tab; much less individual volume. Hope you can get it to work.
I keep using Joop's program & it works well.
Cheers!
