I have a tune in my head which I'd like to submit. I've checked it out against Musipedia with no luck, and I'm trying to search the session's database.
Now, I've stumbled across a problem.
Since I got rid of my PC and got a Mac, it's only since trying to enter ABC notation that I've discovered there's no 'pipe' character on the keyboard (the sort of vertical line that denotes the bars).
How do other mac users get over this problem?
The international keyboard viewer on my Mac shows the British keyboard location of the pipe to be the slash key on the right side above the return key when the shift key is held down. Is that location accurate?
On the PC I use, I couldn't find it for some time. I eventually (maybe through someone on this board) learned that to get it, I had to do a Capitals press on a key at the far left that has a slanting line on it: \ \ \.
(Also, it has a broken vertical line on it, which I've never learned or needed to use.)
This got me the 'pipe': | | |
See if you haven't got something similar on the Mac (I've never used one).
A pipe character was also be "broken bar" on some keyboards. But yes, at least on US Mac keyboards, the pipe is a shifted-\ above the return key.
It is possible that you're using a keyboard that doesn't have this character, and you might need to find another way to type it. At the very least, you could copy one from another ABC file and past it whenever you need it.
I doubt it helps you, but a pipe is ascii character 124, if I remember correctly, so in html it can be done as |
As a convert myself (and I guess slightly off topic) you'll never regret the shift from PC to Mac once you get used to it.
Ironically, one of the few areas I find the Mac weaker than PC is ABC software. I use Barfly but (with apologies to the developer!) it doesn't seem as capable as some of the Win software (though that may be just because I'm not as used to it yet).
If you haven't found it yet I'll have a look for the ||| on my Mac tonight and post it.
||| Found |t! Thanks all.
I only wanted it to submit a tune to this site!
Strangely, if I plug my old USB PC keyboard into the mac, the pipe character comes out as a '~'. Weird. Still, I'm a convert.
Wow, Rhod, I have never used another ABC program that comes close to Barfly! I have his concertina sound font installed, and did some tweaking to the Stress Programs (note equivalence), and if you've got a reasonable ABC setting of a tune, it can sound really decent when you're using it to learn tunes.
Although, having said that, there are a number of bits that I would love to have tweaked to work better - like the player controls, speed control, etc.
But it just SOUNDS so much better than ye olde midi player on a PC, playing perfectly straight (usually with a piano sound)
Just for the record, my mac is an intel based macbook. The pipe was hiding in plain view, next to the enter key, and is a shifted '\'.
I never expected it to be on the right hand side; I just wasn't looking hard enough.

It just could be your 'pipe' is concealed.
