Has anyone here been to the Grass Valley Celtic Festival that happens at the end of September? It is worth a day trip? an overnight stay? none of the above?
It's a little bit of a production getting there from the San Francisco Bay Area, but it might be worth it. I'm taking opinions. Thanks for your help.
KVMR Community Radio is an eclectic music station.
They put a wonderful effort into this show with the help of Annie O’Dea Hestbeck, Alasdair Fraser, & many others.
A number of local musician perform during the Faire. I actually just saw that my friend has put together a band for the show. Over the years they have brought in many of the celtic acts which tour around the west coast.
So considering the drive & either camping or finding a room or driving home its' a good question. This year they are expanding it to 3 days. All in all there will probably be alot of people beating it down to the fairgrounds. Play it save; best just to stay home & sit this one out.
KVMR does broadcast the show ~ so its not a total loss.
Lots of people, yeah, but Dervish is the headliner this year...
I've made it to the last four or five of these festivals, and it's pretty much the usual routine: overpriced vegetarian food and too many sweaty people. But I always manage to enjoy it, primarily due to the workshops at the side stage. The little stage has put up some awesome acts over the last few years: Martin Hayes and Dennis Cahill, Solas, Shooglenifty, Wake The Dead, and of course Alasdair Fraser and Natalie Haas.
Sort of ironic that the Grass Valley Celtic Festival seems to have a purely Irish and Scottish lineup, as Grass Valley has a strong Cornish connexion. It still maintains a Cornish choir. You can buy Cornish pasties in the town centre. The Cornish language and culture seem always to be left out of so-called "Celtic" (in reality Irish/Scottish) events. Given the area's history, it would have been nice to include at least one Cornish folk group.
My guess is many of the Cornish in Nevada County will be enjoying the "Celtic" Festival. The promoters have put out the word to draw in local/regional entertainers. As far as the main acts ~ any festival tends to get performers who are in the area at a given time.
Along with Irish & Scottish KVMR Celtic has brought in Asturian, Cape Breton, English . . . If you feel more celtic music should be heard you can contact KVMR. They have been very helpful for me.
Hope to see you there. Cheers!
Well Asturian and Cape Breton groups being included is nice, but does not address the lack of Cornish participation.
It would be like Boston having a Celtic festival and having every Celtic culture represented except for Irish.
