I don't know about a 'band', per se, but I did recently get to hear some wonderful bits from a yet-to-be-released album he did with Rick Epping, the harmonica player.
I think the album is tentatively titled "Jigging the Blues", and was a fantastic mix of blues and trad. I'm really not usually into that kind of thing, but the bits that I heard were brilliant and tasteful, as well as being virtuosic in both genres.
I know that Frankie has done some touring with Rick as well.
Oh, and keeping with the other smart-alec responses so far, I almost answered "God... Oh wait, he just thinks he's Frankie Gavin"...
Hibernian Rhapsody. They're playing here in Ireland at the moment. Definitely got Tim Edey on guitar and Rick Epping on harmonica. I should be in it but, mostly, I'm out of it!
Derek Hickey on box, Carl Hession on piano, Michelle Lally on vox, Rick Epping on blues harp, Tim Edey on guitar, Tim Edey on guitar, Tim Edey on guitar (lot of guitar debates going on at the minute) and some bloke on fiddle.
At one of the after-show festival clubs at the ar ais aris fest in Buncrana in March, Frankie was showing a mighty interest in a harp player called Tom Byrne who, I think, lives in Buncrana. Not sure what thats got to do with this discussion!
Risky bicuits...
I'll be callin' up t see d new instrumental queen or king in about two weeks.
Shouldn't you be out workin the mines instead of planting them HB,
Don't know whose in his new band, but I saw him with Tim Edey not long ago in Birnam. Brought about a NEW Frankie Gavin. "Out" was the taught, aggressive, domineering and frankly uncomfortable playing I witnessed last (with sidekick B. McGrath). "In" was a far more relaxed, musical, but nevertheless energetic and exciting performance which seemed to hark back to some of those early De Dannan recordings. One could almost forget that Mr G has an ego... ...but not quite... ...his "Scottish" air playing was like Menuhinian Mimicry! But, perhaps it was because Tim Edey's playing is really quite flamboyant and occasionally totally OTT as the balance was right and the combination assured. Apparently (actually I heard it from the horse's mouth) they met in Dublin when Frankie, taking one of his infamous early nights, was texted by S Shannon to say: move yer arse down to this session and get a load of this mad guitarist. So he did and got himself a new kick on the side... ...but perhaps not the malleable musical squib he might have expected when he sat out on the road?!
all is confermed, there is a new line up. johnathon roache is correct. its mike galvin and damien mullane. i heard them up at the world fleadh. where did that box player spring out of?!!!!!!

Re: Frankie Gavin's new band?
Isn't pianist Carl Hession from Galway also in the band or am I confusing this current outfit with an earlier one?
