I love that 1st tune. I've never been able to figure out what's going on with the structure of it. It seems like you only repeat the 1st part twice the 1st time through or something. I rambled on about it for a bit in the comments a while back but nobody responded of course. Perhaps someone might be nice enough to explain now attention has been drawn to it http://thesession.org/tunes/display/4858.
sounds like that going into the tune second time round, the 4 bars at the beginning of the A part are different, then you have the second 4 bars as normal to complete the first pass at the A part (second time through the tune), then you have the A part repeated using the original first 4 bars; then the B part repeated as normal; then the tune finishes with an A part using the modified first 4 bars.
So, to make some sense of that, and giving a label to each 4 bar sequence in the A part, it sounds to me like the tune goes:
a1a2,a1a2,b,b and then on the second time through the tune:
a3a2,a1a2,b,b and it finishes:
a3a2 and then goes into the next tune.
I think the tune is as Kenny transcribed in the tunes section - 3 parts, though the first part repeated only on the first time through. The second part is repeated each time and the third part is never repeated. This is the same setting as on John Kelly's Irish Fiddle and Concertina album. That's how I hear it anyway.
Regarding the structure of the first tune, if you think of the "3rd" part as stemming from a variation of the first part then it makes a lot more sense.
Except for when it's played once through at the end!
I'm sure I've come across other tunes with a similar structure.
I highly recommend the "Come West Along The Road" DVD that this clip was ripped from. You'll find every clip of it on YouTube (and most of them have been discussed here in the endless 'links to YouTube' threads), but you're missing out on better audio and video quality.

Maybe that's why they all looked so miserable. Lovely music though!
Keith, do you normally look happy when you play? Most people I know have a look of concentration and they're staring at the floor when they play. (Kind of like the Kellys there, come to think of it)
I love it. Good trad. fiddling. When we get people in the discussions asking about the "proper or right" way to bow something again, they should immediately be referred to this clip so they can see 3 different "right" ways going at one time. To hell with classical technique in traditional music !
Conan is right about the structure of the tune ('Cathal Rua', as we used to call it). The third part is really just how the tune gets 'turned' to get back into the first part again - the same way that it happens with the College Groves and Bonnie Kate. And the second part just ends a little differently the second time round to bring you back ound to that special turn.
When you think of it like that it seems fairly natural. It's a very special tune!

Good point! I'm usually staring at our main fiddler rather than the floor. Great player, and so easy on the eye that I may well be smiling
Bye now

Not true. Look closely and you'll see her tapping two fingers of her right hand all the way through. I don't see how anyone can not like that music. Art is not subjective!

Re: Isn't this just wonderful?
Sublime playing. But how did they get that swing without a guitar? I think we should be told.

I dunno, maybe you had to be there to hear it, but on that clip, I couldn't hear the bass at all.

Re: Isn't this just wonderful?
Didn't they have swing before guitars were around in ITM, then?
BTW, how do we know it was water in that glass?
