I'm fortunate enough ( although I'm sure some will disagree...) to be going to Cambridge this year, first time ever. Has there been a lively session scene in past years? Any pointers much appreciated.
There was certainly a session thirty years ago, I dropped in on it. That doesn't help you, but it indicates that even there the hand of Irish music has set foot.
Thanks nicholas.
From the lack of other response, I'll take it that there's not a lot of session activity, or that the readers of this board aren't fans of Cambridge.
I've been to Cambridge Festival three times and can't really recommend the session's. The tunes were all a bit Morris Dancy with a few poorly played Irish standards thrown in. All very well if you like that kind of thing but it was a run away moment for me.
I will also be going and there is some good ITM artists this year. Last year there was a very good session saturday lunchtime at the Coldhams Common site, only a few musicians but very good. I listened and enjoyed realising I was not up to their calibre and I would hate to be one of the irritants so frequently discussed here.
I will also be wandering round (aimlessly) taking in the sounds and general hubbubb...with my whistle. I have seen your photo Richard, so may bump into you and possibly play a few tunes/ have a pint, if your up for it? and of course if I remember what you look like!
Don't know what you look like Neil but I hope you have a good time and get to play a few tunes. There are usually plenty of campside musical gatherings dotted about with an assortment of music including Irish trad.
Ah - thanks guys. More encouraging. I'm on the Coldham's Common site with my wife Heike. Maybe manage to get a few tunes. I'm a flute player, probably have an unkeyed 4-section blackwood Copley flute, or if I get scared to bring it, an unkeyed Dixon polymer flute.
I'll be there Thursday evening on the main site..somewhere!! and Thursday night at the Hub tent. There will also be tunes at Coldham's common from 11am on Friday... good luck! Lizzy

I'm certainly up for a tune and a beer. The weather forecast isn't too bad (sunny on Friday, sunshine and showers Sat and Sun): http://www.metoffice.gov.uk/weather/uk/ee/cambridge_forecast_weather.html
