I am interested in learning lots! of slips jigs. Any ideas where to get a list of common slip jigs (20-50 or more)? I want the common ones because I find it very difficult to learn tunes I've never heard played, but very easy when I've heard them before. Thanks.
Butterfly, Kid on the Mountain, Fox Hunters, Fig for a Kiss, Snowy Path, Choice Wife, Boys of Ballisodare, Elizabeth Kelly's Delight, Chloe's Passion, Comb Your Hair and Curl it, Swaggering Jig, Dever the Dancer, Hardiman the Fiddler.
I have only been playing ITM a few years, and have heard of these, so they must be pretty common....
Go to 'FAQs' here, then click on the 'Tunebook' tab, for 'all tunes' as kept in the 'tunebooks' we wee folk who are of the fraternity of TheSesh membership...
The first slip jig listed, "The Butterfly" is the current third most kept of all tunes...
Go to 'Tunes' ~ 'Search' ~ drop-down 'All Tunes' and select 'Slip Jigs', leave the other drop-down as 'All Keys', unless you want to sample by that method too, then hit [ Search ]
There aren't that many, only 246, and if you click on one and then check out:
This tune has been added to ~#~ tunebooks.
You can have some idea of popularity. You may want to start with just the 2-parters, the largest body of slip-jigs? There is a printed book, part of "The Fiddler's Tune-Book" series, Peter Kennedy, that has a large sample of slip jigs in it to enjoy, if you like having it in book form too:
"Slip Jigs & Waltzes"
ISBN: 1-899512-51-9
And Mally recently had a great sale on these ~ a steal at £2.95 :
Some of the first I learned were Kilbrandon and The New Widow Well Married. They´re nice and, I think, easy to play. My absolute favourite is Stolen Apples, but that´s a little more demanding.
I can never remember all the names.
Here are a few;
Another Jig Will Do
Deirdre's Fancy
Give Us A Drink Of Water
Hunting the Hare
My Mind Will Never Be "Aisy"
Slip Jigs

Re: Slip Jigs
What on Earth is Peter's book doing going for £2.95?
Good grief! I'm half inclined to order 10 more - just for when the current one wears out.
