Looking for a song by the Fureys about the horses shifting in the night

Looking for a song by the Fureys about the horses shifting in the night

Does anybody recognize this song. It starts out something like "Down in the old pool hall" its a song about the Tinker life in Ireland. I'm looking for the title and the words to this.

Thanks !!

This site is about tunes rather than words. Probably a better place to ask questions like this is at http://www.mudcat.org/

This site is also about words, well certainly the discussions section, as I have not seen anyone who submits a music notation to argue their point. Is it possible to have an "operatic" discussion page?

And please, do not be predictable.

Comments in the Tunes section sometimes give words that are sung to, or associated with, a tune. I don't think anyone has raised objections concerning the practice.
A well-known example of a tune with words is the polka "I'll tell me Ma", http://www.thesession.org/tunes/display/2434.

Can you give us a hint where you might have heard this ocoinne?
I must admit I have no recordings by the Furey's.
They are a fine group though; so I believe you have a valid question.

Okay, perhaps I should have said "songs" rather than "words". :o)

I think the advice to look on Mudcat for stuff about songs is fair. Sorry about the predictability, but the post had gone some time without a reply.

I like the idea of an operatic discussion page, though. Recitative to be kept to a minimum...

Re: Looking for a song by the Fureys about the horses shifting in the night

I think it is "This town is not your own" mI cant confirm it as the album I had with this on it has disappeared. Finbar and Eddie Furey have done some interesting material over the years. In the same set sold there is a tune called "My uncle in the dail" The words for that would be wonderful.

TheSession has Finbar & Eddie Furey's
album The Dawning of the Day
which includes the song This Town is Not Your Town.
But I am afraid no information on the song.

Re: Looking for a song by the Fureys about the horses shifting in the night

Guess where I found this;

THIS TOWN IS NOT YOUR OWN
(Shay Healey)

In a cloud of dust they roam,
Covered wagons down a country road,
Happy people laugh and sing
Or hear the bell of freedom rings awhile
And the countryside is their own.

Now the town it's drawing near
Parent's eyes begin to shift with fear
While their children still play on
Not knowing they can never settle down
And make the town their own.

Round the camp the fires are hot
Hungry children gather round the pot
But some will go to bed tonight
Without a bite of food or heat or light
'Cos the town is not their own.

And at the dawning of the day
People come and tell us "Go away
We don't want you likes here
You bring dirt, disease and to our children fear
Come on, get out, this town's not your own."

So once more we're on the run
Out to face the cruel winter sun
O land of saints and scholars, we
Have lost our precious gift of charity
And don't recognise our own.
