Hello all. I'll be traveling to Ireland next month and I usually like to pickup some new CDs when I'm over. If someone could guide me to some great new releases it'd be appreciated. I used to like groups a lot, favorites were/are Sliabh Notes and Beginish but these days I'm more into solo or duet recordings. Some more recent favorites are Paul O'Shaughnessy, Gerry O'Connor, and Kevin Crawford. So basically I like a solid melody player backed with nice guitar or bouzouki accompaniment.
Angelina Carberry and Martin quinn
Calico (2 albums) Diarmuid Moynahan and Toler Custy
I like At First Light - John McSherry & Donal O Conner
Bye A While- Padraig Rynne & friends
Ronan Flaherty & Edel Fox
Siobhan Peoples and Murty Ryan
These are a few to try help you on your way.
Are you any relation of mine?
Cool name .... wish I had thought of that one
New Releases a man from Rosscommon called Tommy Cunniffe is releasing an album soon and I'd say Its going to be a bit special hes teamed up with Brian Miller a super guitar player can't wait to get this one myself .look out for it.
... Born for Sport -
Harry Bradley and Paul O'Shaughnessy [Kick ASS flute/fiddle album in different configurations there..
Kitty Lie Over -
Caoimhin O'Raghallaigh and Mick O'Brien. I often refer to this album as "The SexXx in Bb album". You'll know why I call it that when you hear it [if you haven't already!]
The Quiet Glen -
Tommy Peoples. Beautiful playing, lovely tunes! It took me a while to get used to listen to this album when I first got it years ago [I didn't know he was up in Eb at the time] and ahhh, it's so wonderful. Rant, rant.
Well Tempered Bow/Under the Diamond
Liz & Yvonne Kane. GET BOTH OF THESE ALBUMS!! They're a wonderful source for Ed Reavy and Paddy Fahey tunes [and the settings are oh-so-wonderfully fun-tyastically delicious!]. There aren't many albums that have a good deal of these tunes and the playing is so solid.
---
So not exactly new new, but very recent! Good stuff.
You might want to listen to the trad shows on Clare FM http://www.clarefm.ie for a few weeks. They play lots of new releases. They archive a week's worth of shows at a time for on-demand listening. If you listen for three weeks, you could hear nearly 30 hours of music and get a very good feeling for which of the new recordings you like.
As far as my moniker "DrinkyBanjo" if you knew me you'd have no question on how I thought it up, though I don't live up to it like I used to.
As far as where I'm going in Ireland I'll be sticking to the west coast. My wife is from Galway but we are also going to Ballina in Mayo and Ballybunion in Kerry to visit her sisters.
I have a lot of the recordings mention above so at least the recommendations have been very inline with my taste in tunes.
Mary Custy with Eoin O'Neill - excellent fiddle playing with possibly my favourite bouzouki backing of all time, although I struggle to find what key they are playing in.
Franki Gavin and Alec Finn is an all-time classic album, as is Mary Bergin's Feadóga Stáin, which also has Alec Finn accompanying on the bouzouki.
Memories From The Holla with Peter Carberry, Angelina Carberry and John Blake is a superb CD too.

It's a Hard Road to Travel - Andy McGann and Paul Brady. Solid (and exquisite) melody player, nice guitar accompaniment. Hours of enjoyment.

Don't wory, any good recording recommendation is welcomed. I'm familiar with both of those guys so I'll keep an eye out for it.

Re: New ITM Recordings
Well if you don't have that then you should. Also McGann's duet album with Reynolds might be worth 100 other CDs.
New(ish) rec. - Bradley - Night Rambler.

Re: New ITM Recordings
The Mulcahy's CD is one of my more recent favorites...nicely balanced and lovely playing.

And if you don't have Within a Mile of Dublin yet, I think that is my favorite recording of Paul O'Shaughnessy's.

Re: New ITM Recordings
Yes, very true on Tommy's CD. How could I let them down?!
They had a CD launch here in MN, and it was great stuff. Lovely people and great tunes. We were glad to have them for a visit!

Re: New ITM Recordings
Too many to recommend. Have a look at this list: http://www.claddaghrecords.com/www/categories.asp?cid=17 You can listen to some sample clips too.
The latest must-have flute and fiddle duet recording is probably John Wynne and John McEvoy's "The Pride of the West": http://www.copperplatemailorder.com/cicd165.html
Limerick fiddler Diarmuid O'Brien's recording has been on the top of my wish list: http://www.claddaghrecords.com/www/product.asp?pID=2274&cID=17
But now we have Brian McNamara and Tim Collins' pipes and concertina duet album: http://www.claddaghrecords.com/www/product.asp?pID=2286&cID=17

'Kitty Lie Over' by Caoimhin O'Raghallaigh and Mick O'Brien is the real deal as far as I'm concerned. I like it so much I might buy another copy!
