"Distance" Flute Lessons Commencing.

"Distance" Flute Lessons Commencing.

Howdy all,

I'm now providing "distance" lessons via MP3 recordings hosted/exchanged via the .mac 'idisk' site.

The way it works: I've posted an introductory lesson on my idisk site for download, students take this away, and in their own sweet time, record an MP3 of their progress which they upload to their folder on the idisk site, I listen to it and respond by uploading a further lesson, and so it goes on etc. etc...

Requirements: MP3 recorder that will bounce MP3s to your computer (or the 'Adacity' sound recorder/ editor that you can download *free* and record onto with a simple, cheap mic plugged into your computer), a fast internet connection is desirible, otherwise the files can take a while to upload/ download, a Paypal account to pay for lessons (I no longer accept gold bullion I'm afraid).

Get it?

Email me for more details:

You seem a bit taught already.

Re: "Distance" Flute Lessons Commencing.

How would it work when you can't see what the student is doing? How would you correct posture / embouchure etc?

I'm trying to learn the flute at the moment. I can get the lower octave reasonably ok, but I can't get the higher octave at all. Probably crappy embouchure. I doubt listening to an mp3 would help me fix it.

Puzzled - What's the ".mac 'idisk' site"? A link might help people find what you mean.

Re: "Distance" Flute Lessons Commencing.

The 'idisk' site is just a very boring, generic page for hosting files. Nothing much to see.

Go here:

http://www.apple.com/dotmac/

...and click on the 'exchange files from anywhere' option on the 'tour.mac' feature if you're really into that sort of thing.

Tradsahrk: "sit up straight", not complicated. I generally teach embouchure by ear anyway, that's what matters regardless of how pretty it does or doesn't look.

Regards,

Harry.

What a shame, Harry, I'm running out of money. I could give you a lecture on the Japanese style of seaweed dance in return.

Re: "Distance" Flute Lessons Commencing.

What a sarcastic, negative bunch you all are. I personally think that distance learning is a valid approach, especially for people who cannot, or only seldom, find a flesh and blood teacher they can visit. Harry is also not the only person offering this approach, so its not like he's suggesting anything revolutionary. And his playing (from CDs and clips) more than proves his competence...

And taking money for teaching is perfectly fair - I stopped fixing people's computers for free years ago...

So, best of luck with the new proposal Harry and I'll probably be sending you an email for more details sometime in the Autumn (too busy right now).

Re: "Distance" Flute Lessons Commencing.

Didn't mean to be sarcastic or negative. I was simply curious about how it would work.

I teach the fiddle at the moment and I think I would find it pretty hard to correct problems with a student I can't see.

If Harry has found a way to make it work, then fair dues to him. Best of luck with it Harry.

Of course, if people just bit the bullet and had a shower more often, Harry wouldn't feel the need to sit so far away from them.

Re: "Distance" Flute Lessons Commencing.

I'm new to ITM and play the flute. I'm having a hard time finding a teacher ('flesh and blood') so I'd be interested.

I'm a real computer dinosaur (according to my kids) so the file sharing has me wary. What's the risk of sharing files back and forth (viruses, etc.)? Maybe an email to me via this site would be easier for you.

thanks.
