my first abc tune

my first abc tune

Necessity being the mother of invention and all that, I've searched unsuccessfully for this tune so I ended up having to write it all out so I could see if anyone here knows it---my teacher gave it to me but he can't remember the name. Does anyone know it? If it's really a new tune to this site, I'll submit it to the database---my first contribution! I ran this through the convert-a-tron and checked the sheet notation and most of it is correct except for the last bar in the A part on the second time through---that's supposed to be d2e but I couldn't figure out how to put it in there---thanks for anyone's help!

Re: my first abc tune

Kennedy, that's a slide (normally written in 12/8) called Going to the Well for Water. Widely played tune. Find a version of it here: http://thesession.org/tunes/display/455

Re: my first abc tune

Cool, thank you! That'll be my first slide. I have a feeling I'm going to get a lot of practice writing out tunes because my teacher doesn't remember names very well...

Re: my first abc tune

Not a bad way to learn abc notation.

To do "first" and "second" endings to a part, simply do this:

|1 d3 dcB:|2 d3 d2 e||

Leave a space after the number, use a repeat symbol ( : ) in the first bar, and then use double bars || to show the end of the part.

Re: my first abc tune

Where is the best place (web site? book?) to learn the ABC system? I'm new and haven't a clue as to how it works. I looked elsewhere on this site but I must have somehow missed something. I'm used to doing everything by ear, so something written down would be great. Thanks.

Re: my first abc tune

Nolagirl,

Go to Google and search "abc notation." The system is very simple and widely used. So, many sites will give you the standard information.
