The site guidelines say that if we are looking for folks to play with in a particular area, we should contact other members from that area, but my search of the members section profiles did not turn up anyone from the places I will be visiting. If someone from this area is willing to contact me via member email to talk about sessions, I'd appreciate it.
Wow, they are great places for music and less touristy than Doolin. I'm not from the areas but have played there and know a few musicians. Not sure if they remember me though.
Mick Nestor and Ellen Custy are based in Corofin while they occasionally play in McDermott's in Doolin. You can contact Ellen through this page: http://www.mcdermottspubdoolin.com/music.html
I believe banjo player Siobhan O'Donoghue and fiddler/harper Paul Dooley are still in Ennistymon. Here's Paul's website: http://www.pauldooley.com/index.html
Lisdoonvarna is also a great place for music. Christy Barry, Davy Spillane, and Charlie Piggott regularly play there though I haven't had a pleasure to meet Mr. Spillane.
i spent a blissful couple of evenings in lisdoonvarna having tracked mr. piggott to a pub there through informants in ennis. i received a kind and friendly welcome, many tunes, and much thoughtful and inspiring conversation about the music and the great composers and players......i'm only dismayed i haven't been back since. the intention had been quite different....
Sunday nights in Kilfenora, there is a session in a pub whose name escapes me, led by Joe Rynne from the Four Courts Ceili Band. Seeing as there are only a few pubs in Kilfenora it shouldn't be too hard to find. Also on Sunday nights is set dancing to the Four Courts CB at Vaughan's. Great fun and ALWAYS great music, even if you don't dance!
It's a coincidence you should mention these places as the Comhaltas Summer Seisiun nights are just about to start in Corofin (Thursday next week) and Ennistymon next Monday week. Kilrush starts next Wednesday and I'm just home from a launch for this tonight in the the Teach Cheoil (ex Church of Ireland building) where we had a mighty session. There were twenty plus musicians ranging from 16 years upwards including the great Michael Falsey from Miltown Malbay and it was definitely one to remember. If you factor in Willie Clancy week which is only days away, there's a mighty Summer in prospect for the Banner county!
Hi Bannerman,
Thanks for the tips: what are the venues for the Comhaltas Summer Sessions held in Corofin, Ennistymon and Kilrush? I'll be over in Clare in just a few days- maybe we'll share some fiddle tunes.
Cois na hAbhna, Galway Road (about a mile from Ennis Town Centre) is the venue for the Saturday night Seisiún on 7th July - sorry you didn't ask about this one but it's one I always go to. Ennistyymon, Corofin and Kilrush are all in Teach Cheoil buildings. Ennistymon doesn't start until after Willie Clancy week on Monday, 16th July. The others all start next week. I'm hoping to get to Kilrush on Wednesday night so I'll look forward to the few tunes. In case you're trying to identify the venues, both Ennistymon and Kilrush are converted church buildings! Corofin is an old cottage close to the GAA grounds.
Joe Rynne plays in Nagle's pub in Kilfenora on Sunday.
There should be a Tuesdaynight open session in Vaughan's pub in Kilfenora as well.
Mondaynight there used to be an open session in Bofey Quinn's in Corofin. Don't know if it's still running.
Apart from Vaughan's there's no sessions in Kilfenora (I was there end of June/early July 07) - "Never again!" from the landlord of Nagle's and when asked about sessions in Linane's "Never again" was the reply. "Lock ins, garda and licence" appeared at random in incoherent mumblings between the never agains.

The pub in Kilfenora might be called Linnane's.
I think I'm related to the publican.
