I really think that Kevin Burke is the man when it comes to ITM fiddle. His bowing style, rolls, trebles and tunes are just unbelievably breath taking!!! THe whole way he effortlessly uses his bow to get that kevin burke sound gets me everytime! Just listen to his version of the Butterfly.....i mean WOW, AWESOME! i was wondering if anyone else has any thoughts on this GREAT man?
I can't believe you'd waste your semi-precious time listening to this trumped-up old-timey player. Instant Kevin Burke: Get ANY instrument, whack a volume knob on it and turn it up dramatically on the off beat, down on the on. over and over. with no variation. He's a walking wurlizter speaker.
Thing is Tombo (if that's even your real name), I've seen you playing, been in sessions with you even - don't worry, you don't know who i am, and i can honestly say that the gratuitous Burke-ian referencing you extrude over decent tunes is more than a little, how-would-you-say, Elan-reductive.
well Sir Nose! obviously you have no understanding of ITM to even class Kevin Burke as an "old timey player"! You've heard me in session old boy?! well i think i know who you are and your playing (resembling that of a humpy pumpy northern style) is a lot more "elan-reductive" than my "burke style"!!!
Bothy Band - ruined by Kevin Burke
Jackie Daly - ruined by kevin Burke
Patrick Street in general - ruined by Kevin Burke (and Arty McGlynn)
Celtic Fiddle Festival - ruined by Kevin Burke
American Irish Fiddle style - ruined by Kevin Burke
The Music at last Friday's Drunken Poet Session - Ruined by some burkesque wannabe putting the 'OW' back into bOWing
OW My God!!!! now Arty McGlynn! when will this end?!!! obviously my playing is not appreciated by this ITM ignoramous! Kevin Burke made the Bothy Band, as for Patrick Street, that band is just pure gold....I listen to it ALL the time! If only all irish fiddlers listened to Kevin the world would be a better place.
Oh by the way Sir Nose, how long have you been playing Irish music for???
Ah Sir Nose maybe i can make you a few cds of Kevin and send them to you, i would really like to change your deep hatred of him. Maybe listening to Patrick street will give you a deep understanding of "real ITM" ! I look forward to playing some more burkeism tunes when i see you next (dont worry i know who you are!!!)
I like the guy on a personal note, nice fellow to talk to. He is willing to answer technical questions that anyone may have. You cant beat his technique and I suppose that gives him a polished edge diehards hate but are secretly jealous of.
Whether you like him or not, he is definitely one of the most influential fiddler of this music. (Well, he actually isn't among my favourite fiddlers.) The thing is, there are loads of other great Irish fiddlers.
Joze touches on a sore point... I'm the first to admit that in the past, after some considderation i've realised that my intense dislike for certain players has secretly come from my own jealousy.
KB is not one of them.
If anything, the more and more i learn about this sodden battlefield called ITM, the less i like him. Ten years ago i LOVED his playing. It's only now i realise how bloody wrong i was.
Tradshark, I think he was just saying that he doesn't like the playing of your influential and widely respected exponent of Irish music. He's entitled to his opinion isn't he? It has nothing to do with flaming.
Dow, of course he's entitled to his opinion. It's just the way he said it that seemed to me to lack any bit of respect. I'm no Kevin Burke fanboy (I'm more in the Peoples corner), but the man still deserves some respect.
mcdevincabe, my apologies for leaving out Paddy Glackin. It wasn't intentional. I love Paddy's playing and of course he also deserves credit for the Bothy Band.
Why are posts as rubbishy as this not pulled immediately? Who gives a f*** either way? Is the frog the farmers friend? Does your chewing gum lose its flavour on the bedpost overnight? There was a time a few years ago when this type of trivial trite was only an occasional post here , but its got to the stage when its now more chaff than wheat
Just out of interest, what does "Déanann sé comhoibriú le hollscoileanna an tuaiscirt agus leis na coláistí oiliúna chomh maith" mean that meant it didn't merit a translation?
Perhaps someone is not too good at their Irish then because that makes no sense at all. I am not going to make assumptions whether it is PaddyCmusic or dogbox who made the error.
Ah Red Robin, Im glad you brought up the frog thing, it's been bugging me for a while... yes, he is the farmers friend, it's the Cane Toads the farmers hate.
And be carefull mentioning wheat'n chaff to us aussies, after the iraq bribes-for-wheat-for-'oil' thing we're very sensitive...
AND about the reasons why this hasn't been pulled - just a guess but possibly because it contains a freely, (perhaps poorly)-worded (with-out st*r'd out swearing) passionate analysis of both a well known player and a recent session here in melbourne. Could it be worded better? maybe, but that is how i am, who i am and how i express myself.
My apologies, i swear i shall in future only ever contribute to the useful discussions, you know, the ones that list favourite instruments or post YouTube links
Now now SirNose. Play nice or i'll turn this car around and there'll be no dreamworld for anyone!!! That goes for you too tombo . By the way beens we had stellas practice last night. Can't wait 'till you're up here again dude. Crank the f**k up!!!
Kevin's playing is unique and personal, immediately identifiable, and a joy to hear. He's also a genuinely decent, honorable raconteur, dry wit, and great storyteller.
One of the gems who helps make this tradition so rich, diverse, and healthy.
It's a wind up surely SirNose. ...a deliberate baiting attempt.
Because you wouldn't throw in deliberately disrespectful comments like "trumped up old timey player" if you were modestly stating your personal taste and preferences.
This is music, and like all art, ultimately it's a matter of taste and preferences not universal truths. You mightn't like his rhythm, style, ornamentation, or his influence...but surely you aren't trying to say your taste is superior because you know better than the bands that wanted him as part of them, better than the students that adore him, better than the CD buying population? Better than the many fine musicians who love working with him? Because of 10 years of playing and studying ITM? Because YOU are now the expert? Or are you? Because you’ll be out yeared on the ITM thing within one or two posts I’m sure.
I’d prefer to hope and think that it’s just a case of irony, dry wit and droll humour and an attempt at a wind up which all don't tend to come across well in text based discussions. (None of us can see your eyes). It's awfully easy to come across just as someone with a meanness of spirit articulating professional jealousy .....fairly ugly qualities....and KB is a tall poppy and therefore an easy target for that sort of thing. Probably NOT your actual intent, but you can't actually tell from the text.
Having witnessed KB be extremely kind and generous to someone he didn’t know, I guess I tend to hear that in his playing. My listening is flavoured by my encounter with him....and I found him modest, witty and genuinely interested in people and other musicians.
Nothing like a bit of flaming he he.... Like Sir Nose i will for now only contribute You Tube Links! joze how can you not like the Butterfly ??! its like the best ever ;)
Great to hear from you Late in the evening!!! Crank it up brother Seeing that Sir Nose doesnt want us in his dancing troupe, i have written to dervish and solas, maybe we ll get lucky!
Oh Sir Nose i have been learning this tune called Bonnie Kate and its like um.. the best ever!...i learnt from Kevins playing, i was hoping to play it when i see you next
It's obvious that SirNose is in fact infatuated both with Kevin Burke and his playing. Embarrassed by what he sees as an inappropriate physical attraction (though who cares these days?) he is overcompensating.
Well, I could be wrong - it could be Tombo that SirNose is in love with. Never having met either of them, I can't tell.
I never said I dont like the butterfly, I just dont like that particular version. I also at least have the guts to say that to the man and not behind his back, and do so - politely.

why not learn MicheaL Colemans version of Bonnie Kate.Kevin Burke is a very good fiddler, but there are 20 players equally good,it is a mistake to get too fixated on one player, youwill end up sounding like apoor imitation.
hi donough!! yeap been eating awesome food over here actually , the tunes have been bloody fantastic as well!!!
Thanks Dow ! though i m happy to be a poor imitation if that is what organ beil thinks maybe one day we'll end up playing in a session together and all will be sweet! I hate to agrue the point though but there are a million better versions than Michael Coleman's one, and thats not knocking down the great man he was.
Ah Joze the good old " take a tune and make it your own" saying ah??? i have had a few people quote me that one not so long ago.. I tend to think that listen to many of the great players instead of flaunting off on your own little style forming path, your style will develop as you listen and play with other muscians. Oh and earning heaps of money as a player doesnt make anyone great in my books.
Daf
I don't know Aidan's playing (but will keep an eye/ear out - thanks), but the comments in the link would surely spark a lively thread- I quote -
"The fire and passion of this album heralds the arrival of a new movement in Irish Music. It knocks the dry startchiness out of the common reel. The Irish Jig is no longer an apologetic folk tune."
Some of you people are just a puzzle to me. It seems like most of your enjoyment of this music come more from excluding what you don't enjoy than in reveling in what you do enjoy.
Imagine a group of people who love ice cream getting together to talk about it, and all they can say is stuff like "Vanilla is crap, I'm all about choco-cocoanut-pineapple surprise," and "Are you kidding? choco-cocoanut-pineapple doesn't even deserve to be called ice cream."
It seems like a weird way to enjoy something that exists solely to be enjoyed.
As for me, I like ice cream. I like some flavors better than others, and I'm sure there's some "experimental" flavors that I wouldn't like at all, but for the most part, I like too many varieties to say I have a favorite, would never say "no" to either vanilla or some of the more loaded varieties, and I hope the experimenters keep at it, because they'll probably come up with some new, fun things for me to enjoy.
But at last it's coming out. Kevin Burke was in Adelaide in March and I couldn't go. Wanted to know about what craic was going down then, now more than three months later, yer talking about it. Takes a long time to savour ice-cream.
Surfing up on top of the mud in this thread, BACK TO THE QUESTION....I had the privilege to go to a workshop with Tommy Peoples (NJ) one weekend and Kevin Burke the next (Phila, PA) in May this year. Different teachers, different styles, both in command of the instrument and full of priceless little non-documented personal techniques they'd each developed. Tommy was more quiet and led by understated but highly accomplished example, and Kevin was genuinely warm ,funny and very skilled in a variety of styles (unlike the initial comments up above!) I would not have missed either, even though I'd admit KB is a big favorite of mine and TP perhaps less. But I can appreciate anyone spending time to share some skill, an obscure tune, a new ornament, some funny stories....isn't that what it's about? For the record, I found both of them very open and encouraging to all levels of players, addressing any question from very basic to very complex, gentlemen one and all. By the way, Kevin's tour-mate is Cal Scott, who plays guitar VERY well - accompanist and solo, he's got the touch. The concerts and workshops were both excellent and I didn't need to compare styles so much as just enjoy and LEARN from both of them.....you can't *be* them, but you can develop your own sound by listening and adapting.
Thank you Sarah. How lucky you were to have the experience of the two of them and so close together. I appreciate what you have to say about them both. I will probably never have the experience but it is nice to know what to expect should the opportunity ever arise. Who knows what the future might bring. In the meantime I'm glad for you that you could "enjoy and LEARN from both of them".
Some people get so much icecream that they don't appreciate good icecream when they get to eat it.

James Brown's Coffin. Solid gold it was.
Both things pure gold - and both things intimately associated with the death of soul in music.

Re: Kevin Burke What A God of ITM Fiddle!!!
hi donough!! yeap been eating awesome food over here actually
, the tunes have been bloody fantastic as well!!!
maybe one day we'll end up playing in a session together and all will be sweet! I hate to agrue the point though but there are a million better versions than Michael Coleman's one, and thats not knocking down the great man he was.
Thanks Dow ! though i m happy to be a poor imitation if that is what organ beil thinks

Re: Kevin Burke What A God of ITM Fiddle!!!
Why is everyone talking about me? Even I know I'm a craphouse fiddle player.
Well, maybe my bowing is fairly impressive...
As for you, Sir Nose, up yours with a bargepole. See you on the flip side.

Daf
I don't know Aidan's playing (but will keep an eye/ear out - thanks), but the comments in the link would surely spark a lively thread- I quote -
"The fire and passion of this album heralds the arrival of a new movement in Irish Music. It knocks the dry startchiness out of the common reel. The Irish Jig is no longer an apologetic folk tune."
oh dear!

Re: Kevin Burke What A God of ITM Fiddle!!!

Re: Kevin Burke What A God of ITM Fiddle!!!
But at last it's coming out. Kevin Burke was in Adelaide in March and I couldn't go. Wanted to know about what craic was going down then, now more than three months later, yer talking about it. Takes a long time to savour ice-cream.

Re: Kevin Burke What A God of ITM Fiddle!!!

Re: Kevin Burke What A God of ITM Fiddle!!!

Please tell me the initial posts on this thread were a wind up?! There's something very "I-can't-believe-it's-not-ice-cream-ice-cream" about it!
