I am working with Ubuntu Linux with a view to eventually migrating completely from Windows. I have used Wine to install ABC Navigator but I can't get the sound to work. Has anyone else gone this route and learnt what tweaks are necessary?
I don't know Linux, but I do know that I had a problem with getting the tunes to play in ABC Navigator -- then I checked the volume controls, and realized I had the SW Synth volume muted. It only took me an hour to fingure it out. A real computer wizard could do it in half the time.
Ubuntu doesn't like Midi. You can get it to work but you need to be a computer wiz. Try Kubuntu ( thats the KDE version of Ubuntu) it has a midi player.
I had a similar problem using Mepis64, a Linux based 64 bit operating system, and Firefox as a web browser. There was a library issue for the Adobe Flash 9 player. It was simply a matter of my upgrading this library file. As Bernie indicated this is the KDE version of Ubuntu. I found the answer to my questions here: http://www.mepislovers.org/forums/index.php but again this may not be workable for your version. I do however find the community on the discussion forum referenced to be very helpful and knowledgeable. Good luck, I know it can be frustrating as I am still trying to build a driver on this OS for my printer. I did figure out a work around as a temporary fix.
Peace,
Ed
p.s. "buy a mac its better" Aye, it may well be but is the software free?
p.s.s. Hey Biggus Dave do it! I love it and now find Windows a drag.

Yes it does. If I download a midi file from the web I can use Timidity++ to play it but if I play an ABC tune in ABC Navigator or create a midi file from it, Timidity will not play it.
Is there anyone out there who has actually got ABC Navigator to play tunes on a Linux machine using wine? If so I'd appreciate some advice on how to achieve it.
TIA

Re: Linux, Wine and ABC Navigator
If I didn't know what you were talking about I'd say keep off the wine

Re: Linux, Wine and ABC Navigator
I don't know about getting it to work with Wine, but ABC Navigator uses MIDI for sound output, so that might have something to do with it.
You might be better off using a command-line tool like abc2ps, which is highly configurable and produces very nice notation.
A nice article:

Re: Linux, Wine and ABC Navigator
If I use Wine too much, I can't get the tunes to play at all.

Re: Linux, Wine and ABC Navigator
Does the sound work for other sofware? Bernie is correct in suggesting kbuntu as an alternative for midi software.
