Lessons with James Kelly from anywhere in the World!
Lessons with James Kelly from anywhere in the World!
I am very pleased to announce that by the middle-end of next week, James Kelly will be set up to do lessons via Web Cam (AIM or Skype). At this time it is not necessary to send any queries to James himself. I will post a link on this forum as soon as everything is in place.
If you do not play fiddle, you might wonder how lessons with a fiddler would beneficial. I have been a student of James' for quite some time. I am a multi-instrumentalist, but I do not play fiddle. I can tell you first hand that the benefits have been many.
Aside from being a member of Planxty and Patrick Street, James is a man who spent time, and grew up with most of the infamous figures in Irish traditional music that we read about. His insight and knowledge of the music transcends far and beyond the instrument, which he (so masterfully) plays.
Best of all, he is a most gifted teacher who loves to teach!

I've had one private lesson and a couple of workshops with James Kelly, and as K. Pádraig O'Kaine said, he is an insightful teacher as well as a great musician. I agree completely with everything you've said, and I'm sure this is going to be really worthwhile!
Re: Lessons with James Kelly from anywhere in the World!
Depending on where you are in the world, it may be the best option. Even in Aberdeen, if you wanted to learn to play Irish fiddle, I'd say the nearest you would get for a teacher who knows what they're doing would be to go to Glasgow or Edinburgh. [ One possible exception in Dundee ]. Ventures like this shouldn't be written off, fair play to him for doing this, and James Kelly is a great player.

Got to be in this one. I think it sounds fantastic. Will have to set up with a web cam and whatever to make it possible. Been waiting fer something like this to come along. What is going to be the cost? He will probably be inundated. Will there be any restrictions on who he will teach? Good on him. Thanks brazenkaine.

**On a personal note; I can remember there was one a traffic jam preventing me from getting James' house in a timely manner. I turned around and came home to do the lesson on the phone!
I have an insatiable appetite for music, so phone, cassette, minidisk, 2 tin cans and some fishing line would have worked for me
Re: Lessons with James Kelly from anywhere in the World!
That's brilliant! I know James has a busy schedule, so this should work well. You could also take lessons with him at the Young Musicians Weekend coming up in St Paul June 22-24. It's going to be great craic!
Re: Lessons with James Kelly from anywhere in the World!
I find Skype to be too choppy and slow for music. This may be my PC but I doubt it. I'll bet it's my location. I'm still interested though.
Please post more info!

Lessons via a computer screen? Sounds awful. I mean, I'm sure he's a great teacher and player and everything, but gee, no thanks...

Re: Lessons with James Kelly from anywhere in the World!
Well, its not ideal, but its worked for me (as a student of my 'not main' instrument, I must add).
Good luck with it lads! Maybe this way the internet can make up for some of the considerable amount of bullsh*t it has generated in relation to ITM.
Regards,
Harry.
