Tony dixon Flutes

i have recieved a tony dixon flute from my dad ....on with an exchangable head so that it can be a low whistle...

but i'm a lefthanded whistle player..... and i was just wandering wether this flute is wrong if i was to play it "lefthandedly"...
understand?

i mean... there are no keys on it but is the mouthpiece meant to be different or can i just turn the flute round?

Re: Tony dixon Flutes

I believe that the embouchure for a flute is cut to be played right handed. I'm not positive about this, so don't quote me. Try getting in touch with Tony and ask him.

Re: Tony dixon Flutes

I've been a flute player most of my life and have just recently bought both Tony's C & D whistles with both whistle and piccollo heads. I believe they are meant for right handers and can't be reversed to the left. The flute heads are meant to be played with the instrument to the player's right. Best of luck.

Re: Tony dixon Flutes

However, it is no great difficulty to do the few adjustments needed to make a left-handed head...really minor stuff...

Re: Tony dixon Flutes

Some makers also offset the finger holes, but that is also an easy adjustment to make...

If you can play left-handed the only thing preventing you from being a switch fingerer is yourself. It's the same three fingers on each hand, the adjustment is really easy, it is just the brain that doesn't want to believe it is possible...

Re: Tony dixon Flutes

Embouchure is the way your mouth addresses the mouth piece, ie your lips position when you play.

embouchure: (music)
1.The shape of the mouth and lips when playing a wind instrument.
2. The mouthpiece of a wind instrument, esp. a flute.

Proper technique on flute begins right there - getting the sound you want out of the thing in the first place.

In another ten years, I may even know how one does this simple fundamental action. (*SIGH*)

Then you can think about moving your fingers.

Good luck.

Re: Tony dixon Flutes

Dixon flutes are not so beautifully made that it would make a difference left or right. Did you try it before posting this discussion? Should you progress to a better flute, speak with the maker, they can accommodate your preference. Good luck jb

Re: Tony dixon Flutes

I believe Cathal McConnell manages to play a right handed (keyed) flute 'backwards'......
